"How To" at Purdue

Coming to college for the first time is a new and exciting experience for everyone! From getting involved on campus, getting around campus, and meeting new people, there are many things to learn in the first few weeks. In order to make your transition a little smoother, read up on some “how to’s” from current students.

WE Link volunteers have gotten involved on campus through the Women in Engineering Program!

How to Get Involved:

Purdue has over 1,000 clubs & activities to be involved in & finding one that fits your interest may feel overwhelming. One general piece of advice I have heard a lot is to try to be involved in three activities: one for fun, one to give back, and one related to your professional aspirations. Being involved on campus can be a lot of fun, but don’t forget to take your own academic needs into account. Some people may find that being involved in more or less activities is personally beneficial to them. A great way to navigate all of Purdue’s extracurricular’s is by participating in the semester B-Involved fair. The B-Involved fair gives organizations a chance to talk to introduce themselves to students looking to get more involved. How to Get Around Purdue’s Campus

As a Big 10 school, Purdue’s campus is larger than most; it can take up to 20 minutes to walk to class, depending on where you live. Luckily, there are several options to make getting around more enjoyable!
  1. Bring a bike, scooter, or skateboard to campus (or get one here). The campus is super bike-friendly, and a large portion of students skateboard to class due to skateboards’ portability.
  2. Listen to podcasts and/or music while walking. This will keep you distracted, and often you’ll realize you’ve arrived at your destination much sooner than expected. In addition, it doesn’t hurt to walk and get a little exercise.
  3. Ride the bus! The buses are free for students to ride, and there are several convenient routes that loop around campus and go between residential and academic campus. Furthermore, CityBus’s app and website are extremely user-friendly, making it super easy to figure out the right routes, stops, and times you need.

How to Meet New People at Purdue:

One of the best parts of Purdue’s academic culture is that the majority of students want to help each other to succeed rather than compete to be the best. Whether you’re in the classroom, dining court, walking around, or any other place – don’t be afraid to say hi to someone. Some of my favorite ways to meet new people are in my classes and extracurricular involvements. Even though Covid has changed the social landscape of Purdue, there are still plenty of ways to interact and have fun!
