Here comes the Sun! : Summer at Purdue

Image
One of my favorite aspects of Purdue is the beautiful campus. Rain or shine, the beauty of the brick buildings and vast green lawns always stands out. However, I am particularly biased towards summer time at Purdue when the trees and flowers are in full bloom, all of the fountains are turned on and students are happily galivanting around campus. If this sounds as amazing to you as it does to me, then you might want to know more about the opportunities that Purdue offers to extend your college experience into the summertime and enhance your academic career.  Take Summer Courses Purdue offers over 650 over the summer and has plenty of options for the timeframe you can take those courses within. The flexibility of the summer courses is great for pursuing other academic or professional opportunities while also finding some time to do extra learning. Summer classes are beneficial for helping students stay on track to reaching their degree and even getting ahead so that they can pursue other

I've Committed To Purdue! Now What?

With May 1st rapidly approaching, we are so excited to welcome the new Boilermakers of the Class of 2025! There is so much to be excited for as you make the transition to campus over the next few months and we can’t wait to see you. As you go through the process of graduating high school and taking your first steps as Purdue students, here are a few things to look forward to and next steps through the rest of summer!  My first time on campus visiting Purdue after I committed - June 2019 Housing and Learning Communities The Outside of the Honors College About 95% of freshmen choose to live on campus and if you would like to live in a University residence you must sign your housing contract by May 5th to be guaranteed on campus housing. You will rank your room preferences by room style (not by residence hall) and will have the chance to choose between double, triples, singles, suites and apartments to name a few. While not guaranteed, Purdue will strive to put you in your top choice room

Get to Know Phi Sigma Rho

Image
I joined Phi Sigma Rho in January and can honestly say it was the best decision I made since coming to Purdue. For those who don’t know, Phi Sigma Rho is a social sorority for women in STEM. Our aim is to empower each other as women in STEM while still being able to have a traditional sorority experience. Me and My Family and my Big-Little Reveal I decided to go through Spring Continuous Open Bidding (COB) last minute after seeing an Instagram post. However, Phi Rho does do formal recruitment in the fall too! I attended a callout one night to meet the sisters via Zoom and then suddenly I was in interviews talking to members about Phi Rho and seeing if I would be a good fit. I wanted to be 100% sure that this was something I truly wanted to commit to before I accepted a bid. The sisters that I spoke to were understanding of my uncertainty and made sure that I had all of the information and confidence I needed to accept my bid. The moment I knew I wanted to join Phi Rho was during the in

Why I Chose Purdue

Image
As the decision deadline approaches for the Class of 2025, I have been reflecting on my senior year of high school when I was trying to decide where I was going to spend the next four years of my life. It is a decision that felt overwhelming and all I wanted was for someone to tell me where to go. Three years later, I want to share my decision process for why I chose Purdue.      By April of my senior year, I had narrowed it down to two universities, Purdue and another large state school. Both had strong academics and a reputable name, making it hard for me to decide. My mom and I decided to tour both schools in the same weekend to help me make my decision.      W hen I came to Purdue's campus, I loved the campus, academic opportunities such as EPICS and WIEP, the dining halls, the gym, etc., but what stood apart from the other school was how much the students cared about each other. Anyone I talked to was willing to answer my questions genuinely and provide advice based off o

Learn about Access Alums!

Image
Purdue offers many great opportunities for its students to interact and network with its alumni. Access Alums, organized by the Women in engineering program, is one of them. You get to hear from women who are leaders and engineers in their industry and exemplify the power of grit and perseverance. Purdue Alumni at WIEP's 50th Anniversary Celebration With the pandemic, everything has been a bit stressful, including being able to meet industry representatives and learn about the engineering workplace. Fortunately, this year, the Access Alum events took place virtually allowing for both fully online and on campus students to participate. Generally, alumni engineers from all disciplines take part in the Access Alum events so there is an event for everyone. For the Spring 2021 semester, we had the following alumni visits so far:- Thermal Science Associate - Dr. May Yen (PhD ME 2017 Purdue; BS ME 2011 Purdue) President of Kimberly-Clark North America - Kim Underhill (BS CHE Purdue 1982)

Work AND Play Hard: Club Involvement

Image
As an engineering student at Purdue University, it is very important that you establish boundaries for yourself when it comes to having fun and working. At times, it becomes easy to neglect your need for fun and social time. Assignments pile up, deadlines approach, and homework takes longer than expected. These all too common occurrences have led me to reschedule a hangout or cancel a plan, leading to more hours isolated at a desk with my head down. Clubs, however, are not things that you can continuously brush off. It is important that you attend said meetings as it is your responsibility as a member.  More often than not, I have found that these one hour meetings have been exactly what I needed when it comes to recharging my mind. Not only do you get to get away from the stress of school work, but you also get to socialize, relax your mind, and work through a creative outlet.  Personally, I am a member of Greek life and a buddy for Best Buddies. These two involvements have put “p

4 Tips to Fund Your Education

Image
Have you found your perfect school, but are unsure how to fund your four years of education? The price tag on college may seem daunting, but luckily there are plenty of opportunities to earn  scholarships through Purdue  or external resources (such as your community or online). Furthermore, Purdue and other colleges offer financial aid in other forms too, whether it be grants, loans, or work study programs!  When applying for scholarships... WE Link LT Emily on co-op, which is one way Purdue students can fund their education! 1. Be yourself & Apply Anyway  Don’t be shy to tell the scholarship committee about all the great things you have done. Share your interests, aspirations, and what makes you unique. Even if you don't think you meet all the qualifications for the scholarship, apply anyways! An applicant does not need to meet all the criteria to be a strong candidate for a scholarship. 2. Use Your Resources   Use scholarship search engines and your advisers (especially once
