Staying Happy and Healthy at Purdue

As the semester progresses, it is important to maintain a good balance between school and work. Coming to Purdue, I realized it is just as important to have fun and take time for yourself as it is to excel in school. Therefore, I am going to give you some tips on how to stay happy and healthy at Purdue.

France A. Cordova Center

The France A. Cordova Recreational Sports Center, also known as the Corec, is the workout facility at Purdue. There is a ton of equipment including weightlifting machines and racks, free weights including dumbbells and kettlebells, treadmills, bikes, and so much more! There are also many courts to play your favorite sports with your friends such as basketball, pickleball, volleyball, tennis, and badminton. The Corec also hosts intramural sports games, which are some of my favorite activities to participate in.

In addition to these resources, the Corec also provides students with classes to partake in. For instance, they have cycling classes, HITT workout classes, and even cooking classes for students to learn more about nutrition. All in all, the Corec sets you up with multiple resources for you to maintain a healthy lifestyle on campus.

Walking on Campus

Taking walks is a great way for me to relax and spend some much-needed time in nature. Oftentimes, I take walks through campus. Purdue’s campus is always well-kept and beautiful. One of my favorite areas to walk through campus is the Horticultural Garden. This is a beautiful garden on the south end of campus that always puts a smile on my face! In addition to the Horticulture Garden, I love walking down the main quad on campus as there are many fountains and gorgeous flowers planted around the walking path.

I also love taking walks in Happy Hollow Park, a forest with many walking trails. As the leaves change in fall, the scenery is absolutely breathtaking. I am always stunned by the beautiful trees. There is also a trail with many boardwalks crossing over and back a canyon, which is my favorite path in the whole park. There is also a lot of wildlife in the peaceful park as I have seen many deer, birds, and squirrels throughout my many walks and runs. This park is about 20 minutes off campus, so it is a really easy way to take a quick walk and get some exercise after a long day of learning!

Mental Health

Mental health is just as important as physical health. Making sure that you are happy at school is essential to your college experience. Purdue understands this as they provide many resources for you to ensure your mental health is at its strongest. For more information on mental health resources, read Maddie’s blog on her favorite campus resources!

Personally, I find taking some breaks from school and spending time with my friends typically benefits my mental health. In addition, working out regularly significantly improves my mood and energy levels. By finding that balance between personal time and school, my mental health is strong, and I stay happy!

Overall, there are plenty of ways for you to create that much-needed balance between school and self-care. As a junior in college, I now recognize the importance of taking time for yourself and relaxing as it helps improve your physical and mental health, and oftentimes makes you more productive in school. I hope these tips help you out here at Purdue!
