Holiday Season & Quiet Week Coziness at Purdue

December marks a busy time on Purdue’s campus – between the end of classes, finals preparation, travel logistics, and holiday celebrations, there is always something to do. Events and resources around campus help students balance seasonal festivities with academic obligations.

Christmas Show

Purdue’s Annual Christmas Show has been a popular tradition for over ninety years with singing, dancing, and decorated set pieces at Elliott Hall of Music. The show is hosted by Purdue Musical Organizations, which is composed of Purdue Bells (handbell choir), Purdue Heart and Soul (soprano, alto, tenor, bass choir), Purduettes (two soprano and two alto sections choir), Purdue University Choir (mixed voice choral), and Purdue Varsity Glee Club. Tickets go on sale in November; if you can’t make it in person, streaming is also available on the PMO website.

Free Food

A variety of individual colleges, academic and professional societies, Greek life, religious groups, and student organizations offer free snacks, drinks, and meals throughout quiet and finals week. Be on the lookout for announcements over social media or on flyers posted in buildings to score free pizza, coffee, donuts, pancakes, hot chocolate, cookies, grab-and-go snacks, and more. Clubs and student societies frequently offer refreshments for their members while studying during quiet week, while breakfasts during finals week are more common at religious organizations and cultural centers.

Memorial Union

The Purdue Memorial Union is one of the most festive places to be on campus during the holiday season. Christmas tree setup and lighting often takes place at the start of the week of Thanksgiving and stays up through finals week. Seasonal events such as Breakfast with Santa, daily deals at Union restaurants and stores, and miscellaneous holiday celebrations are open to the public and continue through Winter Break. Outside of the celebrations, the Union is a cozy place to study – restaurants offer warm meals, coffee, and snacks to sustain your energy, and the building is open from six in the morning until midnight.

Extended Library Hours

The library may not be the most cheerful place to be as the holidays approach, but having a reliable and convenient place to get your work done and prepare for finals can help you become prepared, get your nerves under control, and finish the semester strong. Both WALC (the Wilmeth Active Learning Center) and Hicks (the underground Undergraduate Library) are open 24/7 from the beginning of quiet week until the end of the weekend of finals week. While other places technically lock their doors after a certain hour, some buildings (Rawls Hall and Dudley & Lambertus Halls are two of my favorites) keep the lights on and do not require students to leave if they are studying inside.

As you balance the beginning of holiday celebrations and finals preparation, Purdue provides the opportunities and resources for you to excel at the end of your classes while ringing in the season.
