Why I Chose Purdue Engineering in Indianapolis
When I first learned about Purdue Engineering in Indianapolis, I was both excited and a bit nervous. This new location presents a new opportunity for students, and choosing the right one is a big decision. However, after spending a semester here, I can say that Purdue Indy is the right fit for me as it aligns with my personal and academic goals. I hope that by sharing what Purdue Indy has to offer, I can help make your decision easier.
As an international student from Singapore, I knew that I was going to have to adjust to life in the United States. Coming from a city-state, I knew I wanted a place that felt urban, which is why Indianapolis stood out to me. Located in the heart of the city, downtown is just within walking distance. Iconic city attractions like the Canal Walk and Monument Circle make this campus feel special. If you prefer an urban setting, Purdue Indy provides just that.
Another reason I chose Purdue Indy was the academic and career opportunities. Gaining research experience and internships was a priority for me. This campus hosts career fairs, including our own Industrial Roundtable, Co-op and Internship Career Fair, and the Tech Connect Fair. These events bring recruiters from a wide range of companies, including many located in Indianapolis. With a smaller engineering student population, it is easier to network with recruiters. When it comes to research, there are great labs equipped with advanced equipment here. Even as a first-year student in engineering, I was able to secure a research position with a professor, gaining valuable training and mentorship from the faculty. It has been a great experience, and I truly enjoy it.
The sense of community was another important factor. Starting college can be intimidating, and I wanted a place where I had a close support system. Small class sizes make it easy to connect with professors to get the support that I need for my learning. The close-knit environment also makes it easier to build friendships. The Women in Engineering (WiE) Program especially helped me feel welcome through social events to meet my fellow engineering peers. The Mentees & Mentors Program introduced me to upper-class students and faculty mentors who provide valuable guidance on college life. There are also student clubs that you can join. I joined the Purdue in Indianapolis Medical Association to connect with others who share my interest in healthcare. There are lots of opportunities for you to find your community here.
At the end of the day, choosing a location is all about what works best for you. For me, I wanted an urban environment, strong career opportunities, and a supportive community. The Indianapolis campus met all my needs, and it was the right choice for me.
