WiE Love Purdue in the Fall
The fall season at Purdue is particularly enjoyable; between sporting and social events and the colder temperatures with gorgeous foliage, campus always feels welcoming and content. A wide variety of recurring events offer something for everyone to enjoy what is, in my opinion, Purdue’s best season.

Sports strictly in the fall season at Purdue are football, volleyball, soccer, cross country, golf, swim and dive, tennis, and wrestling. Basketball plays exhibition games mid-fall and formally begins late fall semester, while baseball hosts themed scrimmages during the fall as well. Football games are a classic on-campus fall activity, and the Boilermakers play at Ross-Ade Stadium which features the Boilermaker Special, Worlds Largest Drum, and All-American Marching Band as well as a 130-decibel train horn to celebrate touchdowns. Tailgating and Purdue’s band and orchestra’s “Thrill on the Hill” halftime preview before kickoff make football games a full-day event, and seeing the stadium under the lights during nighttime games is particularly impressive.
Volleyball games are similarly lively at Purdue, and the consistently highly ranked team plays at home at Holloway Gymnasium as well as special games at Mackey Arena. A dedicated volleyball fan base, the Block Party student section, coordinates ticket exchanges and giveaways, original chants, costumes and decorated outfits, and infamous volume and energy levels during matches. Themed nights, easy ticket swaps, and frequent weekday schedules if your weekends fill up make volleyball games convenient and fun.
There are three regular farmers markets within walking distance from Purdue: the campus, West Lafayette, and Lafayette markets, which all run May through October. From the start of May to the end of October, Memorial Mall hosts vendors selling fresh produce, snacks and lunches, flowers and potted plants, original arts and crafts, and more miscellaneous finds from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Thursdays, making a visit the perfect pick-me-up in between classes. Student turnout is always high, and you can grab a bite to eat with friends, enjoy the gorgeous fall weather, and even get your bike repaired by the Purdue Cycling Club.
To the north of campus, the West Lafayette Farmers Market takes place Wednesday afternoons from 3:30 to 7:30 p.m. and features over fifty local vendors. On Saturdays, the Lafayette Farmers Market downtown has been going strong for over 180 years with live music, two blocks of booths, and a variety of neighboring shops and restaurants to visit while you’re in the area.

On and off campus at Purdue, you can find a multitude of opportunities to enjoy the changing leaves and cooler temperatures of a Midwestern fall. Natural areas with portions managed by/affiliated with Purdue include Horticulture Park, Meig’s Student Farm, and Martell Forest. Within a few miles from campus, the Celery Bog Nature Area spans 195 acres and includes marshlands, migratory bird nesting grounds, and the Lilly Nature Center. Further off campus, Indiana’s state parks offer gorgeous trails, rock formations, and fall foliage; Prophetstown, Shades, and Turkey Run state parks are particularly and deservedly popular.
Whether you’re discovering a new favorite activity or revisiting a time-honored tradition, fall at Purdue provides ample opportunities to enjoy beautiful weather, time with friends, and the classic college atmosphere.
