Staying Stress-Free at Purdue
There’s no doubt that college can feel overwhelming at times. With midterms, projects, and daily assignments, things can quickly become busy and stressful. Luckily, Purdue has plenty of resources to help you out!
All in all, Purdue provides lots of support for its students to maintain a healthy and stress-free lifestyle. From the Corec, to CARES, to CAPS, there are plenty of ways to manage your stress and get help when you need it. Just remember it’s ok to feel stressed and give yourself a break when needed. Purdue is here for you!
The Corec
One of the best ways to manage stress is to burn it off! Whether you like to run a few miles on the treadmill or track, lift weights, or even play some pickleball with friends, the Corec has it all. Located conveniently on campus, the Corec has something for everyone and can be a great place to get in your workout or do a fun social activity. Nothing says stress management like a free sunrise yoga class or getting to the top of the climbing wall! The Corec also offers well-being programs, including light therapy, nutrition and cooking, coaching, mindfulness, and more. I personally enjoy putting in an hour on the treadmill during the day at a walk, jog, or running pace, just to get myself moving. It helps remind me that if I can finish that workout, I can definitely overcome the academic challenges I’m facing.Community, Assistance and Resources for Engineering Students (CARES)
CARES is a program created specifically to serve the mental health and well-being needs of engineering students here at Purdue. The CARES Hub is the home of the program, located in the Neil Armstrong Hall of Engineering, and provides a space for students to relax, play games, do homework, and more. CARES has an on-site therapist, social work graduate students, and peer mentors. Additionally, they often host social events and even have a therapy dog! The CARES Hub is a great starting point when you feel overwhelmed and need a place to decompress.Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS)
CAPS is a campus-wide program to support students’ mental health. CAPS offers same-day/next-day services and 24/7 access to a crisis line available for students in need. CAPS services include individual therapy, group therapy, workshops, consultations, and more, many of which can be free for Purdue students. There are also apps and digital resources available for students on their self-help journey.Well-being = social + mental + physical health
It’s important to remember that your individual well-being is made up of many factors, many of them social, mental, and physical. These things can be difficult to balance, but it is important to maintain a healthy lifestyle as you progress through college. I often manage my stress by planning my week in advance. I enjoy writing myself a to-do list and organizing my calendar to give myself an overview of what to expect, so I don’t get overwhelmed later in the week. Most days, I try and schedule in time to go to the gym and put it on my calendar (because for me, once it’s on the calendar it’s official), as being active helps me manage my stress. It’s also important to make time for fun things, like going to dinner with friends, club meetings, or going to the Purdue basketball games. My friends and I try to go on a “sweet treat” run once a week to get away from our computers and notebooks and enjoy some ice cream! All in all, Purdue provides lots of support for its students to maintain a healthy and stress-free lifestyle.
