The WIEP Learning Community: Everything You Need to Know

What is a learning community?
Learning communities (LC) are a great way to make a large institution feel smaller and they provide students with the opportunity to connect with their peers both academically and socially. In a learning community, students live with others who are related by major, interests, or a class. Students in the same LC will live in the same residence hall, take some similar classes, have opportunities to get involved and participate in out-of-class programs or trips, and learn about/experience the many resources available at Purdue.

What is the Women in Engineering Program Learning Community?
            The Women in Engineering Program Learning Community (WIEP LC) is a diverse living and learning community for first-year engineering students. These students will all live together in Meredith South Hall, which is a brand-new dorm on campus with pod-style housing, lounges and study spaces on each floor, rec rooms, a large community kitchen, and a few multi-purpose rooms. The social component of living alongside other first-year engineering students allows you to form many friendships that you may not have made just in the classroom. Additionally, it’s super easy to study, work, and hang out with those friends who live right down the hall or up/down a floor from you.
Many first-year engineering students who are a part of the WIEP LC also take a one-credit WIEP seminar class, ENGR 194: Women in Engineering Seminar, where engineering alum from recent graduates to corporate executives come back to speak to students. The alum presentations paint their journey from choosing their career to their daily job responsibilities and elaborate on their successes and obstacles throughout it all. The speakers inspire students, open them to new perspectives, and helps them explore the different engineering disciplines and career paths.

I’m in EPICS or GOSS Scholars, can I still be in the WIEP LC?
            Yes! If you are selected for EPICS, GOSS Scholars, or another learning community, but want to live with other first-year engineers in the Women in Engineering Program Learning Community, you should be able to participate in both while living in the WIEP LC residence.

I’m in! When do I sign up by?
            Admitted students can apply now! The priority deadline is April 15, 2020 and the secondary deadline is June 5, 2020.
