How to Successfully Transition into College

Although college is a lot of fun, it’s still a lot of work!  You might be thinking that school is school, and college won’t be that different from high school, but college courses are actually quite different from high school courses.  Never fear though, we are here to give you some tips and tricks to transitioning to college!

Engineers having fun and loving college!
One big thing about college is that you are a lot more independent.  You are responsible for getting all your work done on time, as well as knowing everything you have to get done as the professor might not warn you when assignments are due.  Most of your assignments will probably be posted online somewhere on a course page, so it is important to check that frequently! In addition, you are a lot more removed from your professors and it is on you to get to know them.  Your professors care, but they can’t reach out to 100+ students.  If you want to get to know your professors, you should definitely go to office hours!

Another big difference between college and high school is that your grade is a lot more dependent on exam scores.  In high school it is easier to get good grades by just completing homework; in college, your exam grades make up the majority of your grade.   Therefore, it is important to know the concepts of the class really well and take it upon yourself to make sure you spend enough time studying for exams.

If the above information sounds a little daunting, don’t worry because here are some tips for you!
  1. Go to Class!  You are already paying so much for your education, so it would be a waste if you didn’t go class; plus you are probably missing out on valuable information if you don’t go.
  2. Don’t be afraid to ask for help! Going to your professors' office hours is a great way to go get help, plus Purdue has some excellent resources for tutoring, such as supplement instruction.  Supplement Instruction (SI) is like free tutoring where a student who has done well in the class leads a session where you do extra problems.  Also, SI typically is in a smaller group setting, so it is easier to ask questions there.  In addition, Purdue has help rooms for subjects such as math, statistics, thermodynamics, and many more!
  3. Stay organized!  Getting a planner or a calendar is a great way to stay organized and write down when all your assignments and exams and extracurriculars are.
  4. Don’t be afraid to relax and have fun!  College also has a lot of fun times, so make sure to take a break and enjoy your college experience!
