De-stress, Get Fit, and Have Fun on Campus

Purdue’s engineering curriculum is challenging, and it’s important to maintain a good work-life balance for your mental and physical health! Outside of classes, there are lots of outlets on campus to get your mind off of school and allow you to de-stress. Check out two of my favorites below!

Purdue female engineers intramural team
My friends and I (bottom right) after winning an intramural sand volleyball game freshman year with our floor’s team!

One of the best decisions I made at Purdue was joining intramural sports teams. Purdue offers over 40 different intramural sports over both fall & spring semesters. They have sports such as basketball, flag football, soccer, softball, kickball, inner-tube water polo, and more! Usually hall floors organize teams, but you can also form a team with your friends. I met some of my closest friends by signing up for my floor’s IM sand volleyball team freshman year, and now we sign up to play as a team again every fall. Since then, my friends and I have played IM soccer, dodgeball, and basketball, and we always have the best time! Spending time every week competing together with your team will give you fond memories and close friendships.

Being on an IM team is a great way to meet new people and have fun playing some cool sports. It’s one way to actually have fun on a weeknight, as studying for classes can sometimes take up your time, but intramural sports can give you a much needed break. For the hour you’re competing, you’re not worrying about school or other responsibilities -- you’re completely focused on winning. Intramural sports level the playing field -- no matter how in shape you are or how good you actually are at the sport, everyone is welcome to join a team!

Another way to de-stress is by exercising at the co-rec, Purdue’s fitness center. Going to the gym is a great way to relieve relax and help you take a break from thinking about your homework. Not to mention, regularly working out also increases productivity in all areas of your life, improves your mental capacity, lowers anxiety, and helps you get better sleep. The co-rec is absolutely gorgeous, and has so many amenities to offer: a rock climbing wall, handball/squash/wallyball courts, basketball courts, a turf soccer field, a recreation pool, hot tub, indoor running track, and so much more. At 145,700 square feet, the co-rec has room for any activity you’re looking to do.

If you’re looking to make your workout session a little more fun, I highly recommend buying a Group X pass from the co-rec! Group X offers workout classes, such as tabata, cycling, tai chi, barre, strength training, yoga, zumba, and more. They offer free classes the first week of school to allow students to try some out, and passes are very affordable. I love going to Group X classes with my friends because they’re so engaging and allow me to try new workouts.

Intramural sports and utilizing the co-rec and its resources are just a few ways to de-stress, have fun, and get fit on Purdue’s campus. Interested in learning more? Reach out to us with the information below!
