Destressing During Finals

With the semester wrapping up, we are starting to get into the most stressful time of the school year: finals. This is one of the most stressful times for high school and college students. The anticipation of what grade you are going to get is starting to boil over. An exam that's worth 40% of your grade is daunting, especially if you are teetering between 2 letter grades. But, I am here to tell you that it will be okay and give you some tips about de-stressing this finals session.

Take a Break and Remember It’s Okay

Studying is extremely important to succeed in your finals, but it is not realistic or healthy to study for 12 hours a day. You will burn out, and more importantly it is not healthy. At the end of the day it is okay if you don’t get the grade you wanted. Something that I like to remind myself is that my worth and ability is not defined by my performance on an exam, and this is the case for you too. No matter how stressed you may be about the outcome of your final exams it will be okay, and in order to stay healthy take a break. Now I'm going to share some of my favorite ways to take a break.

Make time for your friends

It is so important to spend time with your friends because it makes you happier! It is super important to have a strong support system to talk about how you feel during these stressful times. During finals it is hard to take breaks from studying so I really enjoy studying with my friends. I love going to Java house to get a coffee with my friends and studying. I have spent so much time there doing schoolwork this past semester. Alternatively to working with friends I enjoy eating meals with friends. This is not only a great study break but also an amazing way to spend time with friends.

Stay Active

I think we all know how important it is to stay active, but there are so many amazing ways to stay active around Purdue. My favorite thing is going for walks around our beautiful campus. It’s so nice to have time to yourself to just walk, this is one of my favorite study breaks. I always feel so refreshed after going for a walk while taking a study break. Another one of my favorite activities are Group X classes at the Co-Rec. This is a great way to try new things from cycle classes to yoga to pilates. This year my friends and I have started doing a weekly cycle class together, combining spending time with friends and staying active. Finally, you can try rock climbing at the Co-Rec, this was something that I hadn’t done before coming to Purdue. I really like climbing but It’s not something I do super often so this finals week I want to go climbing at least once.

Take some time to Yourself!

Find an activity that helps you wind down that is NOT homework. This could be watching a movie, building Legos, baking or really anything. I really like putting a movie on and crocheting, it takes my mind off of exams. Something fun you can do at Purdue is go get a massage at the Co-Rec in the Wellness suite. This is not something that I personally have tried but I really want to try this before I graduate.

On Campus Mental-Health Resources

Something that I really recommend at Purdue is CAPS (Counseling and Psychological Services). They offer a variety of services such as workshops, individual counseling, and group therapy. It’s a great way to find professional support in navigating any challenge that may come your way. If you want to learn more you can call them or stop by the second floor of PUSH. CARES(Community, Assistance, and Resources for Engineering Students) is also a great way to find support through your journey in engineering. You can't stop by their office in Armstrong if you want to learn more.

I hope you all have a (fairly) stressful finals and I wish you all a great end to the semester!
