Say YES to Purdue!

Image
Having been in your shoes exactly four years ago, I, Allison Meyer, remember the stress of picking the perfect school for the next four years. This is a big decision but more than anything, you should be excited that you have an amazing school like Purdue to choose from. If you are still on the fence about where to go, let me tell you the top 5 reasons why I chose to come to Purdue! Allison Meyer is a Senior in Mechanical Engineering and chose Purdue from Raleigh, North Carolina  1.        Top 10 Engineering School  With more than 13 types of engineering, Purdue consistently ranks in the top 10 and offers their students room to grow and find their passions. One of the best things Purdue has to offer is their First-Year Engineering (FYE) program because it gave me a chance to decide what I really want to do and what I want to specialize in for the next four years. The FYE program helped me find my passion for  mechanical...

Finding Your Home at Purdue

Image
Finding Your Home at Purdue If you’ve decided where you’re going to college, now comes the fun part: moving in! The period of transitioning into college is really important in feeling at home in your new home. Here are some things to consider when putting together your new life at college: Orientation (Boiler Gold Rush) BGR is the introductory week for all of Purdue’s incoming freshmen. It is a whole week of fun: social events, resource fairs, interest sessions, group activities, and games! It’s basically college without the classes to help acquaint new students with campus, but also to teach them about campus traditions, Purdue culture, and University resources. Most importantly, Boiler Gold Rush is a great way to lasting make friendships right when you get to campus. Extracurriculars Clubs and student organizations are another big part of student life at Purdue, and definitely a great way to expand your social circle and meet new people. There a...

Stress Relief Around Purdue

Image
With finals week coming up, stress is building. Final projects, homework, and exams seem to pile up at the end of the semester. Luckily, there are lots of great ways to fight stress on Purdue’s campus and off. Make Time for You This is probably the most important section when it comes to destressing. When it comes down to cramming over information that you learned until 4am the night before an exam or going to bed at 12 or 1, get some sleep. It is better walk into an exam well rested than to be exhausted. Remembering one more thing while forgetting five things you would’ve known is not worth it. EAT. Make sure you don’t skip meals just to get a little bit more done on homework or a project. Skipping meals can decrease your productivity and your mood because you’re constantly hungry. If there is something that you like to do to unwind at the end of a long day, make time for it, even if it means not getting everything done exactly when you wanted. You’ll start the next d...

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT: Lauren Risany Major: FYE Graduation Date: 2022 What is your favorite class you've taken and why? EPICS lab -- Deaf Kids Code I’m on an Engineering Projects in Com munity Service team working to improve communication between deaf and hearing people. Last semester I got to work on a senior design team on a pair of ASL translation gloves that will translate American Sign Language to audio using motion capture technology and an app. The people on my team were some of the most passionate, well rounded, and knowledgeable people I have ever met! They did a great job helping me learn more about the electrical and computer skills I needed to know on the project and were always excited to help. I even got the opportunity to serve as Project Manager over the 4 sub-teams working with our project partner and I was the one heading up design reviews at the end of the semester. I have learned so much about working on a team, lear...

Prospective Students Chat with Current Women in Engineering

Image
This year, WE Link expanded their reach to prospective students by inviting those attending Purdue’s for Me Days to chat with current women studying engineering. This event took place as an offered session at the end of the visiting student’s Purdue’s for Me Day which is an opportunity for admitted students to tour campus and hear from a variety of organizations and engineering disciplines at Purdue. In addition to about 15 current student volunteers from WE Link, our event included snacks and a slideshow of Purdue engineering facts! The purpose of our event, “Chat with WIEP WE Link” was to be able to allow the prospective students to feel as though they could relate and share experiences with current students at Purdue. In many cases, this allowed for them to learn about current student’s journey to Purdue and their discipline in engineering. Students that were able to attend expressed how much they enjoyed being able to speak with actual students since they already had ma...

Purdue's Diversity- India

Image
Purdue is one of the most diverse universities in the US and continues to have the second-largest international student population among public schools. As of Fall 2018, there were 933 Indian undergraduates and 1068 graduate students. But Indian international students feel very much at home here due to the various cultural organizations that they can be a part of. Students can take part in these clubs and make friends with others who share the same values and traditions. There are also various events hosted by these clubs which are open to all students throughout the year and they help students feel at home. 1)       American Indian Foundation – It is one of the largest American organizations supporting development work in India. They also host events to spread and promote India’s rich culture and traditions. Popular events include Diwali and Holi, two of the most celebrated festivals in India. Students celebrating Holi 2)   ...

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT: Laura Flandermeyer, FYE

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT: Laura Flandermeyer, First Year Engineering My favorite part of Engineering so far is the ability to work with others, form strong bonds, and learn from my teammates; some of my best Engineering friends are from my ENGR 161 teams! At Purdue, my favorite class has been CHM 116 because I love exploring the natural sciences, working in the lab, and furthering my understanding of everyday processes. The best thing about Purdue is its size! The university is large enough that you can constantly meet new people and have plenty of opportunities, but you’re also able to find your niche and create a smaller community. One of my best memories at Purdue was sledding with my ENGR 161 team on Slayter Hill as team bonding! On campus, I am involved in the Women in Engineering Program and the Navigators, a Christian ministry. I am also part of Silver House in the Honors College. I enjoy eating cinnamon rolls at Windsor, running on campus (when its not freezi...
