Meeting WIEP at Purdue's for Me Days

Image
Dr. Beth Holloway,  Leah H. Jamieson Director of Women in Engineering , giving the introductory presentation about the Women in Engineering Program (WIEP) at Purdue Purdue’s for Me days are an opportunity to visit campus once you have been admitted and decide if Purdue is the right fit for you. We certainly hope that during your time on campus, you come to appreciate all that Purdue has to offer for an undergraduate experience in engineering. To help make this trip to campus even more informative and relatable for prospective students, the Women in Engineering Program (WIEP) has put together a session for students and their families to attend where they can speak with current students. To start off, the visiting students and their families learn a bit more about the Women in Engineering Program at Purdue and the various staff members that support it. After this short presentation, current students are there to talk about their experiences with clubs and organizations, h

Flex Co-op Q&A

Image
Me and some of the other GEA co-op’s from Purdue As a prospective engineer, you’ve probably heard a great deal about the importance of getting industry experience (internships, research, etc.) before graduating. One of the many ways Purdue helps its students gain this experience is through their co-op program. For those of you who are unfamiliar with what a co-op is, it’s essentially a multi-term internship with a company. In most cases, co-op students will alternate between work and Purdue each semester (Fall, Spring, Summer). At Purdue, the Office of Professional Practice oversees the 3-session, 5-session and Flex co-op programs. Q: How did you first decide you wanted to make the commitment to co-op? One of the main reasons I chose Purdue was its established co-op program. I really wanted a school which would help and support me in getting and maintaining a co-op, if that was the path I chose. In the spring of my freshman year, I was ready to apply to the program and b

5 Reasons Why First Year Engineering is Your Path to Success

Image
Purdue University’s Engineering program has many unique features including its exceptional professors, invaluable resources, passionate students and more. One specific aspect that stands out is the First-Year Engineering (FYE) program. Students admitted to the College of Engineering complete this program in which they enroll in a common curriculum of core classes before transitioning into their preferred engineering discipline for their sophomore year. In this way, Purdue stands out from other universities who have their students dive right into their majors. Here are 5 benefits of partaking in the First Year Engineering program: 1. Understand your Options Before you Choose Choosing your major is one of the most monumental decisions made in our careers, so the choice must be made thoughtfully. However, the common core classes you take in high school may not provide sufficient experience and knowledge of career choices to help you decide. This is a major reason why First-Year

Why I LOVE Purdue!

With Valentine’s day just 2 days ago, this is a time to express our love for friends, family, and big things in our life. For me, one of the things I am most grateful for is the fact that three years ago I decided to attend Purdue University. If you are curious what this means, let me tell you the top 5 reasons I LOVE PURDUE!        Our volunteers showing their love for Purdue's campus :)     1. Top 10 Engineering School       With more than 13 types of engineering, Purdue consistently ranks in the top 10 and offers their students room to grow and find their passions. One of the best things Purdue has to offer is their First-Year Engineering (FYE) program because it gives you a chance to decide what you really want to do and what you want to specialize in for the next four years. During your first year classes, you will hear from professors and students in each engineering field and have the chance to work on a variety of different projects. Through these projects an

How to Visit Purdue 101

1. Exploring Engineering at Purdue As an admitted or prospective student at Purdue, there are so many ways to visit and experience all Purdue has to offer. One great way to come to campus is to attend the Women in Engineering Program’s event called “Exploring Engineering at Purdue.” The event is run twice a year (once each semester), and will be held on April 20 th this Spring (you can register here )! Exploring Engineering at Purdue allows current junior and senior women in high school to explore the different types of engineering Purdue offers, tour the campus (including tours in the First Year Engineering buildings and classrooms), and connect with current women in engineering students and faculty in learning about curriculum and extracurricular activities. The all-day event is a great way to picture what life could look like at Purdue and give prospective women engineers an idea of what discipline within engineering they are interested in.   I personally had a chance
