10 Things I Love About Purdue

Choosing where to go to college is kind of like choosing your co-star in a rom-com. You want a place that challenges you, inspires you, makes you laugh, and supports you when things get tough. As a woman in engineering, finding a university where you feel like you belong and thrive is everything. So, in the spirit of 10 Things I Hate About You, here are the 10 things I love about Purdue University, and why you will fall in love with it, too.

1. I love the free tutoring

There are so many resources available to students on campus made to help ensure our success. My personal favorite is the free tutoring provided by the Women in Engineering program for all 100-200 level STEM courses. I was never alone while I struggled with challenging calculus or physics topics - I always had an upperclassman by my side helping me study for my exams

2. I love that I can talk with industry professionals 1:1

The Women in Engineering program's Access Alum events provide me a great way to practice for career fairs and interviews and get to know women in engineering industries. Through Access Alum, I have gotten the opportunity to learn about so many different kinds of careers and decide what kind of career I would like to pursue. This has been such a fun, informal way to speak with women engineers working in various companies like Boeing, NASA, Northrop Grumman, General Motors, and more!

3. I love the opportunities

From one of the largest student-run career fairs in the nation to the various company talks and resume help sessions that Purdue hosts, there have been so many opportunities available to help me ensure my success once I graduate. Industrial Roundtable is an engineering career fair hosted at Memorial Mall in Purdue West Lafayette that brings in nearly 400 companies hiring for internships, co-ops, and full-time positions. If you're looking for something more personal, there are always events happening on campus that allow you to speak with companies one-on-one and learn more about their opportunities.

4. I love how much fun I can have

There is always something fun happening on campus! Whether you're heading to Elliot Hall to watch a musical, grabbing a Den Pop at the Discount Den, or cheering on Purdue at the various game days, there is never a boring day on campus. Clubs, programs, and cultural centers offer so many things to do throughout the week! My personal favorite is the Día De Los Muertos event that the Latino Cultural Center puts on every year.

5. I love the mentors that always have your back

The Women in Engineering program's Mentors and Mentees has provided me with amazing mentors that have supported my journey during my first years at Purdue, and now I am lucky to be able to be a mentor myself! You get paired up with an upperclassman women in engineering in a same or similar major and they are there to help answer your questions, give you their best study tips, and make sure you take some fun breaks!

6. I love the campus that feels like home

The campus is beautiful! I love putting a blanket out on the grass on warm days and studying and doing my homework by the various water fountains around campus. From the residence halls, you can walk to so many cafes, restaurants, libraries, and shops. Make sure to explore the campus when you visit! Maybe you'll find even some hidden study spots... (hint: check out the 3rd floor of the Math building!)

7. I love the close community

The Women in Engineering Living and Learning community has provided me with some of my closest friends to this day. It's only for first year women in engineering, so you'll be surrounded by other women in the same classes as you. When I was doing homework, I was able to walk out into the common area and talk with others who were working on the same problems, and we'd help each other understand different topics. It helps build community, helps you understand your homework better, and helps build lifelong friendships.

8. I love how involved I can get

Purdue has over 1000 registered student organizations that you can get involved with! Whether you're into intramural sports, playing video games, or crocheting, there is sure to be a club for you. If there isn't, you can also start your own! Clubs are a great way to get involved, meet others with similar interests, and have fun during your time at Purdue.

9. I love the confidence that Purdue has helped me build

Being at Purdue has helped me feel like I belong in engineering. There is such a strong network of women in engineering here and it has helped me to realize that we all deal with similar challenges. Through the free tutoring, resume help sessions, mock-interviews, and fun events to bond with other women in my major, my confidence as a woman in engineering has skyrocketed. The Purdue Women in Engineering program offers so many opportunities to help you throughout your college experience.

10. I love the way Purdue supports Women in Engineering

From your first year to your last, Purdue offers a support system the entire way through. In your first semester you can take ENGR 19400: Women in Engineering Seminar, where you can hear from engineering alums, learn tips for academic success and time management, and learn about resume prep and interviewing techniques. There is also ENGR 29600: Gender in the World, a study abroad experience, and ENGR 49400: Gender In The Workplace, a class to prepare last-semester seniors for graduation!
