A Boilermaker's "Pur-Do" List

Throughout my time at Purdue, I have been lucky enough to partake in many traditions, attend fun events, and visit new places. Purdue has so much to offer beyond academics that makes students’ college experiences fun and exciting. In this blog, I want to highlight some of the “must-dos” as a Purdue student. In other words, here is my “Pur-Do List”:

Attend Grand Prix

Grand Prix is one of the most well-known Purdue traditions. This event features a variety of student organizations that build and race go-karts on Purdue’s nearby racetrack, which is located just down the street from campus. It is hosted by the Purdue Grand Prix Foundation, who uses the profits from the race for student scholarships. There are fun festivities surrounding Grand Prix, such as the annual parade, which makes Purdue’s community come alive.

Check Out Community Events in Lafayette

There are countless events hosted in the City of Lafayette that are open to the public. Events such as Germanfest in the fall or A Merry Main Street Market in the winter are great ways to explore the Lafayette area. I have attended several of these events, and they always have delicious food, fun vendors, and an overall great atmosphere.

Attend a Show in Elliott Hall of Music

Purdue hosts a variety of shows throughout the school year at Elliott Hall of Music. The venue is located in the center of campus and hosts student performances as well as Broadway shows and concerts. Events such as the Purdue Christmas Show bring the student community together and offer a fun way to escape from the craziness of classes. Artists such as Bob Dylan, Parker McCollum, Noah Kahan, and Yung Gravy are just a few notable performers who have taken the Elliott Hall stage during my time at Purdue. The venue has also hosted musicals such as Jesus Christ Superstar and Dear Evan Hansen.

Get a Den Pop

There is a shop on the outskirts of Purdue’s campus called Discount Den, where you can find discounted Purdue gear as well as small convenience items. Additionally, Discount Den is home of the famous “Den Pop.” A Den Pop is a large cup of soda for only 85 cents. There is a whole line of fountain drinks to choose from and fun recipes posted on the walls to mix sodas together. I love getting a Den Pop as a pick-me-up or study motivation throughout the week.

Enjoy a Meal at Triple XXX

Triple XXX is one of the most iconic food spots in West Lafayette. It is only a five-minute walk from the Purdue Memorial Union. It is well known for its homemade root beer, and it’s a great spot to grab a delicious bite to eat with an authentic diner aesthetic.

Go to a Purdue vs. IU Sporting Event

Purdue’s main rival is Indiana University (IU). As both schools love to poke fun at each other, the best atmosphere is always at our rivalry sporting events. Purdue vs. IU football and basketball games are full of energy and Boilermaker pride. Attending these games has been some of my favorite college memories.

Festivities on Slayter Hill

Slayter Hill is located across from Owen Hall near the residential side of campus. There is an outdoor amphitheater at the bottom of the hill, where Purdue’s All-American Marching Band performs for tailgaters before every football game. Additionally, there are fun events and concerts hosted there every year. In the winter, students love to go sledding on the hill. Overall, this space holds Purdue traditions no matter the season.

Visit Turkey Run

Turkey Run State Park is located approximately an hour drive from Purdue’s campus. It has a variety of hiking trails and camping facilities. It is the perfect day trip to explore nature, and it is truly so beautiful.

This list only scratches the surface of the opportunities at Purdue. Events and traditions like these have made my college experience unique and memorable. They have expanded my horizons and helped me feel like a true part of the Purdue community. I am so grateful to be leaving Purdue not only with a reputable degree, but also with a community and memories that I will carry with me forever.
