How Purdue Supports You!

I’m here, now what?

I spent freshman year taking all the necessary classes, spending hours studying just to transition to mechanical engineering. The great thing about Purdue is you get to delve deep into your major almost immediately after transitioning into it. I had known what I wanted and how I was going to get it. But as I sat in my first Thermodynamics lecture, I had never felt more unsure of whether I belonged there.

Engineering courses are never easy, I knew that going into my Thermodynamics class. But with Thermodynamics, and most engineering courses, it’s important to understand the fundamentals, as everything builds on them. I knew that I had to seek out help soon.

I started scouring my course pages, Purdue’s website, and asking all my teachers where I could go to get help. I discovered that the mechanical engineering department holds many “help rooms”, that run from 9am-5pm, in which students could get access to personalized assistance from teaching assistants on their ME courses like Thermodynamics and Statics! I began spending hours in the help rooms. I liked to stay there and do my homework, as even if I wasn’t directly asking questions to teaching assistants, it was a great place to find community and meet people in my major who were seeking the same help I was!

I’ve also been attending Supplemental instruction sessions since my freshman year. Supplemental instruction is a unique Purdue quirk, where you can attend sessions after class and practice problems from your CS, physics, and math classes with groups of people. The group setting is a unique way to learn about and be exposed to different approaches to solving a problem.

Purdue has an Engineering Success Center that helps prepare students for freshman-junior year courses. The Women in Engineering Program also hosts free tutoring for many 100-200 level math, science, and engineering courses. Each engineering major also offers their own resources to support their own students, whether it’s tutoring, test prep, or fun relaxation activities to de-stress before exams. There is truly no end to the support that is available to you here at Purdue, but it's up to you to seek it out!
