How WiE Supports You
The Women in Engineering Program (WiE) offers a wide range of resources designed to support current students throughout their engineering journey. In this blog, we will highlight the programs and opportunities available through WiE that help students grow academically, professionally, and personally.

ENGR 19400: Women in Engr Seminar – Offered in the fall, this 1-credit seminar is designed for First-Year Engineering students. The course welcomes Purdue alumnae who share their career journeys and professional experiences. It provides a valuable opportunity to learn from successful women engineers while building professional skills through activities such as resume reviews and elevator pitch practice.
ENGR 29600: Gender in the World – This course is a Spring Break study abroad available to all engineering students. The curriculum explores gender dynamics across global contexts. The includes an immersive travel experience where students observe and analyze these dynamics firsthand. In past years, students have traveled to Belgium, France, and Spain.
ENGR 49400: Gender in the Workplace – This course takes place in the spring semesters and is designed for junior and senior students. This class discusses strategies for success in the workplace as a woman engineer. It allows students to build professional skills before entering the workforce.

First-year engineering students may apply to live in the Women in Engineering Learning Community. This program is currently located in Meredith South Residence Hall. The purpose of this Learning Community is to support the success of women engineers at Purdue. The students living in this community are all First-Year Engineering students. Therefore, they take many of the same classes, which helps create a collaborative and supportive environment. Additionally, the Learning Community arranges one out-of-town trip each semester for students to build skills and friendships. In past years, students have visited places like the Indy Speedway and Chicago.
It is important to note that students living in the Learning Community will also enroll in ENGR 19400. Additionally, this program is not available for honors students due to the Honors College live-in requirement. However, honors students are still encouraged to participate in ENGR 194 and other WiE opportunities.

Monthly Meetings – M&M Monthly Meetings bring together engineering students from all class years to build community and support one another’s development. These meetings focus on professional growth, networking across majors and grade levels, and often feature alumni speakers who share insights from their careers. It is a valuable opportunity to expand students’ networks, connect with peers in their major, and strengthen professional skills.
1:1/Group Mentoring – The mentoring component connects First-Year Engineering students with upperclass students who share similar academic or career interests. This provides first-year students with personalized guidance, advice on navigating coursework, and meaningful connections with experienced peers.

WiE partners with the Women in Science Program to offer FREE tutoring for first-year engineering, math, and science courses. The tutoring sessions are walk-in style, meaning no appointment is required. This makes it easy for students to get help when they need it while also learning from experienced students and forming study groups with peers in the tutoring space.
Tutoring takes place Sunday through Thursday evenings in Shreve Residence Hall. Conveniently located in the heart of Purdue’s residential campus, Shreve is just a short walk from most residence halls. Therefore, it is an accessible and supportive academic resource for students.

Purdue has an extensive network of successful alumni, and many Purdue engineers are eager to return to campus and connect with current students. Access Alum events provide a valuable opportunity for students to network with Purdue alums in an informal, walk-in setting. These low-pressure events create an approachable environment for building connections and asking meaningful questions.
During these sessions, alums share insights into their career paths, their companies, and what a typical day looks like in their roles. It is a great way to gain a clearer understanding of life as an engineer. In some cases, alums may even accept resumes for opportunities at the companies they work for, making these events not only a networking opportunity but also a potential pathway to a job.

Purdue WiE’s Outreach Team hosts events for students in kindergarten through 10th grade to spark their interest in engineering and introduce them to the field at an early age. These programs are a meaningful way to inspire the next generation of engineers while showcasing the many possibilities within the profession.
For current students, these events are a rewarding opportunity to get involved and give back to the Women in Engineering Program. Current students help develop and deliver hands-on activities while sharing their passion for engineering with younger participants. In addition to making an impact, outreach involvement allows students to gain leadership experience, build teamwork skills, and form strong connections with peers who are equally passionate about inspiring the next generation of engineers.
At its core, WiE is about community. Whether you are attending a Monthly Meeting, studying at tutoring, traveling abroad, connecting with alums, or inspiring the next generation, each opportunity is designed to help you grow while supporting those around you. WiE is here to ensure that no engineering student at Purdue feels alone on their journey. We encourage you to get involved and make the most of everything WiE has to offer.
