Why I Chose the WiE Learning Community

Image
Transitioning from high school to college can oftentimes be an exciting (and a little bit scary) experience. When it came to my personal transition, I was looking forward to going to a big school but was worried about getting lost in the crowd, as going to a school with over 40,000 students intimidated me. This led me to investigate learning communities, and as soon as I saw the Women in Engineering learning community, I knew I had found my home. Meredith South Residence Hall, built in 2020, is the dorm where the WIEP learning community is located at.  By living in the Women in Engineering learning community, I formed friendships with other women in engineering, many of whom live down the hall from me or within a floor of me. It’s nice being able to go out into the lounge to work on homework and seeing some of my friends in the same classes as me out there also working on the same thing as me. Another perk for me personally when it comes to living in the Women in Engineering lea...

A Letter to My High School Self: From Purdue Students

Image
At our first volunteer night of the Spring 2022 semester, current female engineering students were asked to write a letter giving advice or words of wisdom to their high school selves. Writing letters to yourself allows you to better visualize your current goals and put your life into perspective. It also helps you reflect on your present self while also allowing yourself to think about what you would like to implement into your future. Here are what some Purdue students had to say to their past selves! WIEP Members with their Letters at Volunteer Night Don’t Stress and Over-Plan Your Future! It may seem like you are being proactive by trying to plan everything you want to accomplish while in college, but overplanning events and situations can cause you to be overstressed and worried about sticking to your rigid college ideas. College is an environment that allows you to constantly learn how to grow and adapt to new situations, and part of the experience is to teach yourself how to man...

EXPO 2022 and Purdue Career Fair Preparation

Image
One of my favorite aspects about Purdue is the stellar preparation for obtaining internships, co-ops, and full-time jobs as well as the many career fairs. EXPO, which took place this past week, is just one of Purdue’s many career fairs, including Industrial Roundtable (IR) in the fall as well as many fairs for specific engineering majors.           This year, EXPO was a two-day event where over 170 companies come to recruit students for internships, co-ops, and full-time job positions. Traditionally, EXPO is held in late January or early February and takes place in Purdue’s gyms in the Co-Rec. This year EXPO took place in person on February 8 th , 2022 and virtually on February 9 th through Career Fair Plus, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.         A week before EXPO, students were able to log onto Career Fair Plus on their phone through the app or on their laptop browser to book ...

Weighing Your Options

This is the time of the year that you will be hearing back about college decisions. It’s always so exciting to know that you got into college. Now one of the most challenging parts of this process is underway, and you know get to choose where you want to go. This can be difficult but here are some things to think about that can hopefully make your decision a bit easier!  1. Academics: Going to college is a lot about getting a good education, so it is one of the most important factors to consider when deciding where to attend for the next four years! Look into the how the program you’re interested stacks up against your other contenders. For instance, Purdue is one of the top-rated engineering schools in the United States, currently ranked 4th, according to U.S. News World Report. We also have the number one Agricultural and Biological Engineering program! Click here to learn more about the program you have in mind.   Opportunities related to academics are also important!
