A Letter to My High School Self: From Purdue Students

At our first volunteer night of the Spring 2022 semester, current female engineering students were asked to write a letter giving advice or words of wisdom to their high school selves. Writing letters to yourself allows you to better visualize your current goals and put your life into perspective. It also helps you reflect on your present self while also allowing yourself to think about what you would like to implement into your future. Here are what some Purdue students had to say to their past selves!

Don’t Stress and Over-Plan Your Future!

It may seem like you are being proactive by trying to plan everything you want to accomplish while in college, but overplanning events and situations can cause you to be overstressed and worried about sticking to your rigid college ideas. College is an environment that allows you to constantly learn how to grow and adapt to new situations, and part of the experience is to teach yourself how to manage new tasks that are given to you. While it is a good idea to set larger goals and aspirations for the years ahead, don’t get caught up on the finer details of college planning and give yourself room for self-development.

Look Forward to New Opportunities!

Purdue has so many incredible organizations, programs, and communities to be involved in and enjoy. Talk to new people in your classes and put yourself out there to fully take advantage of everything Purdue has to offer. Your college experience is what you make of it, and constantly keeping your eye out for things relating to your interests or even things that may put you out of your comfort zone is the best way to make sure that you are truly experiencing your years to the fullest. A student in CHE ’25 says, “Keep looking forward to the opportunities that await you, they are worth the anticipation!”

Be True to Yourself!

As you adjust to your new lifestyle, check in with yourself and make sure that you are still the person you want to be. Don’t feel pressured to act or do things a certain way because of others, and don’t feel obligated to commit to the same experiences as others if it doesn’t interest you. Surround yourself with people who help you strive for the best version of yourself. Take care of yourself both mentally and physically, and remain curious and ready to learn. A student in AAE ’25 says, “Every little experience makes you who you are, and remember that Purdue cherishes every single one of those experiences.”
