Next Steps for your Next Giant Leap!
With the school year winding down and the May 1st deadline approaching, you might be wondering what to do next after you have accepted your offer to Purdue? We’ve got you covered with a "Pur-do" list and things to look out for over the summer.
1.) Complete VSTAR
Virtual Student Transition, Advising, and Registration (VSTAR) is the important first step you will take as a Purdue student. You will automatically be enrolled into this orientation module on Brightspace, our online learning platform, and be expected to complete 2 over the course of the summer. However, it is important to complete the first module as soon as possible to set up an appointment with your academic advisor! This is when you will fill out your course request form for your first semester. The second module opens on July first and will go over campus-specific information you will need to review and complete related activities before coming to campus in the fall.2.) Meet with your advisor and request your classes
Here is the fun part! Again, after you finish the first VSTAR module, you will be able to set up an appointment with your academic advisor and request your fall classes. When deciding on what courses to request, make sure to think about the AP/IB/College credits you have coming in and look at the plans of study for your desired major, and talk about these with your advisor. Also, some of the activities in VSTAR may guide your thinking about what interests you and influences a course or two that you can request–I know it did for me and is how I introduced myself to the idea of being a Materials Engineer. This is also when you can request ENGR 19400, which is the Women in Engineering First-Year Seminar course! This course hosts a variety of engineering alumnae who talk about their career choices, their daily routines on the job, and their challenges and successes in their professions and well as in their personal lives. Speakers range from recent grads to well established corporate executives. This is a class where you hear it like it is from women who were once where you are now!
3.) Sign up for the WIEP Mentors and Mentees (M&M) Program
You will be receiving emails and mail over the summer from the Women in Engineering Program. In one of each, you'll get information about how to sign up for the WIEP Undergraduate Mentoring program: Mentees and Mentors, also known as “M&M”. M&M gets undergrad women engineers together as one big group once a month for fun, conversation, networking, and advice! M&M is designed for you to build a network with other female engineering students while learning timely personal and professional strategies to help you be successful in the classroom and on the job. Mentoring relationships are key for sharing and receiving helpful advice about engineering, college life, and successful preparation for the future. Sign up for the program here!4.) Have a great summer!
Enjoy these months with your friends and family before heading to school in the fall. Purdue might be miles and miles away from where you live, so enjoying the little moments at home this summer is really important. While making sure you are on top of your pre-Purdue tasks, make sure you take this summer to relax and have fun at home. It might be tempting to “get ahead” of your fall classes, but be assured that you will be exactly where you need to be academically once classes start. Those are a few “Pur-do” list items for your summer! If you have any more questions, please let us know by emailing us or reaching out to us on social media.
