What to Do With a Day Visit to Purdue?

Visiting campus plays such an important role in helping you make your college decision. Seeing campus gives you a look into what campus life is like, and can help you envision walking on campus as a student. Springtime is when campus is buzzing with many tours and events, and many prospective students choose to come during this time. I remember back to my visit the spring of my senior year of high school, and after that day I knew Purdue was going to be my home away from home. But because of its popularity, it can sometimes be difficult to find a tour time that works with your availability. Don’t let this deter you. There are so many ways you can do a self-guided tour, and hopefully this blog will give you some ideas of what to do with your time.

1. Walk through Academic and Residential Campus

There are so many places to walk through and see around campus. Getting a look at both academic and residential sides are important since your time will be pretty split between the two as a student. On the academic side, places that I suggest going to are WALC, the engineering fountain, the Union, Dudley, and Lambertus. On the residential side take a walk down 3rd Street, where you can see multiple residence halls, retail dining, dining courts and Purdue’s Recreation Center. Check out Purdue's Campus Map to find your way around campus, and find other buildings to check out.

2. Connect with the Women in Engineering Program

There are a couple ways that you can get connected with us while here on campus. One great option is to visit us at our office in Dudley Hall, room 2516 during the weekday from 9am-4pm. In the office you can get connected with someone on the Women in Engineering Program staff, where they can answer any questions you may have. You can also feel free to reach out to us at our email: welink@purdue.edu and get connected with a student on the WE Link leadership team.

3. Grab a Bite to Eat or Coffee

On and off Purdue’s campus there are many favorites amongst the students to fuel up by grabbing some food or a great cup of coffee. Some of my personal favorites are the Union, Canes, Another Broken Egg, Greyhouse, and Copper Moon. There are so many options you can choose from but make sure to grab something to re-energize for the rest of your day.

4. Take lots of Pictures!

Don’t be afraid to walk around and take pictures during your time here on campus. They will be great memories to be able to look back on, and can help you remember the different spots that you have visited. Make sure to grab a picture by the Neil Armstrong Statue, the unfinished ‘P’, under the archway, and by the engineering fountain.

5. Check to See if there is a Purdue For Me Event

While official registration for Purdue’s For Me is full, the Women in Engineering Program offers an information session on those days that does not require any registration. This is a great event to be able to hear more about Purdue, the Women in Engineering Program, and get a chance to talk with a group of students to hear about their experiences as well as ask questions. Our remaining Purdue for Me dates, times, and locations are listed below:

Friday, March 24th 1:30-2:30pm WALC 3084

Monday, April 3rd 1:30-2:30pm WALC 3084

Tuesday, April 11th 1:30-2:30pm WALC3148

All in all, there are so many things you can do, even without an official tour. This list is just a few ideas, but there are so many more. Always feel free to reach out to us for more information, suggestions, or to get connected with someone here at Purdue.

Boiler Up, and we hope to see you on campus soon!
