How Purdue Invests in You!

When looking for the right college for you, it is comforting to know how the college you are planning to attend supports you. I know I had the same feelings when looking for my home for the next four years. There are many important factors to determine a good support system when choosing a school. Picking a college to attend is a huge decision, so I am here to make that choice a little easier by explaining how Purdue invests in you!

Mental and Physical Health

Purdue takes many measures to ensure that students are healthy, both physically and mentally. Purdue University takes mental health very seriously to guarantee students’ safety. There are a plethora of counseling resources for students to talk to if they are struggling. In addition, there are numerous support groups for students to join, such as the LGBTQIA+ support group, to help navigate college.

As for physical health, the France A. Cordova Recreational Center, also known as the CoRec, is a great place for students to get active. In the CoRec, there are multiple weight-lifting areas and treadmills for students to workout. In addition, there are climbing walls for students interested in rock climbing. As for sports, there are many basketball, volleyball, and pickleball courts indoors. Outdoors, there are sand volleyball courts, basketball courts, pickleball and tennis courts, and soccer fields. There are also many classes the CoRec provides, such as cycling classes, HIT workout classes, and many more! Furthermore, the CoRec ensures that students are fueling their bodies properly. With a market full of healthy snacks, and a smoothie and power-bowl restaurant, there are many places for students to grab a post-workout meal. In addition, the CoRec also provides students with cooking classes to properly learn how to cook healthy meals. I personally take advantage of the weight-lifting areas, the treadmills, and volleyball courts. I find working-out to be a great way to manage stress, and I am thankful that Purdue provides the equipment to do so!

Clubs and Social Activities

Purdue has over 1,000 student organizations for students to pursue their hobbies. There are wide ranges of clubs, so everybody can find their interests, as well as a group of people who share the same interests. I am personally part of The Boiler Book Club! The Boiler Book Club hosts monthly meetings to discuss novels, as well as holding other events that supply students with new reading content. If there is not a current organization for your interests, Student Activities and Organizations makes starting a club or organization really simple!

There are also intramural sports for students to join. They are a great way for students to stay active and meet new people. I play on indoor and outdoor volleyball intramural teams, and have a blast doing so. There are different leagues for different levels of experience, so everybody can play!

Infrastructure

According to Purdue lore, John Purdue, the founder of Purdue University, required 10% of the campus to be under construction at a time. This is to ensure that Purdue keeps up with innovation advancements, and is always up-to-date with new technology. That being said, the campus is constantly undergoing renovations to keep up with this policy. Continuing on the physical health investments, Purdue just renovated the France A. Cordova Recreation Center over the past summer. In this renovation, more lifting equipment was added to reduce wait times for students. In addition, the new engineering building, Dudley and Lambertus Hall, was also recently built. This new, modern-looking building provided the engineering schools with more classrooms, office spaces, and study spots.

Some other current and planned renovations include the Mechanical Engineering building, Windsor Halls, and University Hall. The Mechanical Engineering building is undergoing lab and workshop expansions to create a more hands-on learning experience for students. Windsor Halls, a dorm located on campus, has improvements being made to ensure that this space looks modern for the incoming students. Lastly, University Hall is planning on undergoing renovations to keep up with innovation. University Hall is the only remaining building from Purdue’s original campus, founded in 1877. A statue of John Purdue sits near the entrance of this building as a reminder of the land grant used to establish Purdue University. It is very impressive that John Purdue’s legacy continues to live on through Purdue’s continual renovations. Having these constant renovation projects is reassuring to me that Purdue cares about their students’ learning experiences.

All in all, Purdue has so many resources available for their students. Purdue ensures that there are ways in which their students are supported. As a Purdue student myself, I feel that there are many ways in which I am supported to have a balanced life. From mental and physical health, to clubs and social activities, to constant renovation, there are so many ways in which Purdue invests in you!
