Purdue’s Women in Engineering Program (WiE) is dedicated to encouraging women to study engineering and is committed to providing an environment for women in engineering to grow and prosper at Purdue. There are several resources provided by WiE to help students succeed, and plenty of opportunities for new students to take advantage of.

Learning Community
The WiE Learning Community, centered in Meredith South, provides the opportunity for women in first-year engineering (FYE) to live on campus amongst other women in FYE. This learning community is a great way to meet other women in engineering at Purdue, and most of the Residential Assistants are upper class engineering students. To apply for this learning community, students must have signed a housing contract with Purdue and preferably apply by the priority deadline, as those applications will be considered first. To learn more and apply, click here.
Classes
There are two classes offered by WiE at Purdue, with the first being the ENGR 194 seminar, which is geared towards first-year engineering students. This class meets once a week and features a different engineering alumnae each week, who discuss the path they took to get to where they are now and provide advice. These alumnae range from well-established corporate executives to recent graduates from a range of engineering disciplines. This class is a great way to meet other women in engineering as well as see what you can do with your engineering degree from Purdue. You can learn more about the class here.
For upper-class engineering students, WiE offers ENGR 494: Gender in the Workplace. This class assists in enhancing professional development as well as transition skills to help women adjust from the academic to professional environment transition and discusses solutions for internal and external barriers preventing women from reaching their greatest potential in the workplace. You can learn more about ENGR 494 here.
Tutoring
One of the biggest perks of the WiE program at Purdue is the free tutoring service. Trained upper-class undergraduate students provide support for any 100 and 200 level Math, Science, and Engineering courses, and this program is also co-sponsored with Women in Science (WISP). Tutoring is offered Sunday through Thursday and no appointments are required. These services are offered on the bottom floor of Shreve residence hall, right next door to Meredith South, where the learning community is located. There is also an online option available. You can learn more here.
Mentoring
WiE offers a Mentees & Mentors program for current undergraduate students, known as the M&M program. The mission of M&M is to retain women undergraduate students in engineering. They host monthly meetings where dinner is provided and a guest speaker presents, along with a fun networking activity. There is also the opportunity for students to participant in a 1:1 mentorship pairing, where FYE students are paired with an upper-class participant in the same major. There are also monthly social events that promote community building and personal development. Learn more about this program here.

Employment
The WiE program at Purdue provides many opportunities for student employment, as there are several student leadership teams all utilizing student employees. The Outreach Leadership Team provides support for our K-10 outreach programs along with several other community events. The WE Link Leadership Team acts as the personal link between 11-12 grade high school students and focuses on activities geared towards educating women interested in engineering to learn more about all that Purdue offers. The Operations Leadership Team provides administrative support for the WiE program along with supporting the largest recruitment event - Exploring Engineering at Purdue. The M&M program also has a leadership team that works to organize and facilitate the events hosted. Another employment opportunity available for students is becoming a teaching assistant for the ENGR 194 seminar. Availability for employment within these teams fluctuates throughout the school year, and current students can watch their weekly email from WiE for employment opportunities.
Study Abroad
With the first trip over spring break of 2024, WiE is excited to announce its weeklong study abroad opportunity, called “Gender in the World.” This study abroad opportunity is taking students to Paris, France and Brussels, Belgium while introducing undergraduate students to the impact of gender in a worldview and how they can become change-makers in regard to inclusivity. Students will also be earning two credit hours through this trip. For details on the 2024 version of this trip, click here. It can be noted that the trip may adjust to include additional or different locations in the future and is not guaranteed to be the exact same trip currently offered.
Access Alum
The WiE program offers opportunities for current students to have informal chats with alumnae through access alum events. Typically, these events are held in Dudley Hall and this is a drop in event where students are welcome to come by for just a brief chat or the entire time. Occasionally, alumnae may indicate that they are recruiting for their company and that they may be accepting resumes. Learn more about access alum here.
The WiE program is a fantastic resource to use at Purdue. One of the greatest things about this program is that once you are admitted to Purdue, you are automatically a part of this program and have access to all of these resources!
