FALLing in Love with Fall Break at Purdue

Fall. What a great time of the year. The air becomes crisp, the leaves turn bright orange, yellow, and red, fall drinks galore and football season is underway. With classes being in full swing, and students getting into the routine of the new school year, campus is alive with fun activities. This year as a sophomore it has been such a cool experience to see what Purdue’s campus really looks like. People all around, clubs and organizations hosting events, career fairs, and the Farmers Market has come back to memorial mall on Thursdays. While Purdue did such a great job and providing as many opportunities as possible during last year, it still has been really special to see the campus full of people.

However, as great as being on campus has been, students have been studying hard through a couple weeks of midterm exams and everyone is so excited for a break. The great thing about Purdue is the 2-day Fall Break that we get around Mid-October. For fall semester 2021 that break is now just a couple days away, and all that anyone can think about is getting to spend an extra long weekend enjoying some relaxation and taking advantage of the time to enjoy some of the classic fall activities. There are so many opportunities and activities when you are a student at Purdue to make the most of this break.

Staying on Campus?

Are you from out of state, or don’t have the ability to go back home? No worries at all because Purdue is located in the heart of Indiana, and if anyone knows how to do fall right, it’s here. There are so many things that you can take advantage of this fall break, while classes aren’t in session.

      1. Pumpkin Patch & Corn Maze

We all know that Indiana is known for their corn and soybeans, so the fall is a perfect time to enjoy the agriculture the state has to offer. Exploration Acre’s is known as Indiana’s largest corn maze and pumpkin patch. It is located only 12 miles away from Purdue’s campus and is a student favorite in the fall. This is a great location to take a trip with your friends during fall break. Exploration Acre’s has all the classic fall activities including a corn maze, pumpkin patch, hayrides, and of course some fall flavored foods. If you are looking for something to do this fall break, this is the place for you

2. Hammocking

If you are looking for something more relaxing to do during your time off, there are many great places to put up a hammock on Purdue’s campus. This can be a great time to relax with some friends or take some time for yourself. Find yourself a good book, watch a movie, or even take a nap. A hammock makes a great place to lounge around and enjoy the outdoors.

  3. Movie/Netflix Marathon

During the semester itself, it sometimes seems like there is no time to do nothing. There are always classes, homework, club meeting, interviews, and the list just goes on. While for the most part these things are fun, exciting, or at least getting you closer to graduating with a degree, sometimes all we want is to be able to do NOTHING. Fall break is a perfect time to catch up on much needed Netflix time, or movie marathon your favorite movie series. Either way take some time this fall break to enjoy the freedom to spend a few hours watching Netflix or curling up in your room to watch a really good movie. We have been working so hard, we deserve it.

4. Apply to Internships/Research opportunities

Now if you feel like you can’t just relax for the entire break, I fully understand. Fall break can also be a great time to fill out a couple more applications if you are hoping to have an internship or summer research set before the end of first semester. With a little extra time on your hands, you can take some time to really look into these opportunities, and perfect your resume or application to be ready for any opportunities that come your way. With this, you still get a break from regular schoolwork, but still check off some important to-do list items.

Now of course if you are going home for break this list can still be for you. Hopefully though you will get some time with family, pets, and friends, and enjoy getting to sleep in your own bed.

Whatever you choose to do this break, make sure you’re are taking time for yourself to recharge, and take care of your mental health. This break is a great opportunity to reset and get ready for the rest of the semester.

Boiler Up, and happy fall!!
