Work Hard & Play Hard at Purdue: Employment Opportunities
Transitioning from high school to college leads to many new and exciting opportunities. We have the freedom to work on our homework, spend time with our friends and eat our meals wherever and whenever we want to. Naturally, all of that freedom is followed by many new responsibilities too. We must organize our work and classes to meet various deadlines, maintain a great support system of friends, and stay healthy and nourished. Many college students take on the responsibility of a job alongside their education to support themselves financially, gain work experience and meet more people. Purdue offers many employment opportunities across campus which cater towards diverse skill sets and interests. Here are some examples of and resources for employment opportunities offered at Purdue:
We are the WE Link leadership team and are student employees of WIEP focused on recruitment! |
Work for the Women in Engineering Program (WIEP)!
The moment you step on to campus, you are a part of the Women in Engineering Program! Students are encouraged to join the community and take advantage of all the resources the program has to offer (i.e. mentoring program, living community, free tutoring). For those who want to get more involved with the program and make some money, WIEP offers a lot of paid positions for students in every year. Students can help out in the office, work in recruitment, speak to prospective students, manage the mentorship program, organize volunteer events, tutoring and more! It’s also a great opportunity to meet great friends and network with alumni and faculty. These opportunities will be communicated to current students through the weekly email sent out to all women in engineering students.
Teaching Assistant (TA)
Teaching assistants are a common role found in essentially any department at Purdue. Based on the subject matter, the nature of the job can be different. Usually, responsibilities could include grading assignments and exams, attending recitations or labs to help students with questions or practice problems, proctoring exams and more. This role can be a great addition to your resumes, help form better relationships with faculty and an opportunity to help other students out.
Research
Every academic department on campus is usually offering many research opportunities for students. While most of these positions for undergraduate research might be offered for credit, there can also be roles that are paid. This is often up to the department and faculty member but check out other blogs on our page to learn more about how to get involved in research like this one.
Supplemental Instruction
Purdue has an academic success center (ASC) on residential campus that provides a number of services to support students in their classes. Particularly, the ASC organizes weekly sessions filled with collaborative activities to help current students practice challenging concepts. These sessions are planned out and led by undergraduate students who have already taken those classes and succeeded. So, every semester students who performed well in certain classes are invited to interview for the position. If accepted, students are invited to join the fairly large community of supplemental instructors, have the great opportunity to help students overcome challenging material and even receive consistent academic coaching from the staff. To learn more about supplemental instruction and the ASC visit their website!
Residents Assistant
Another campus employment opportunity which also has amazing benefits is working as a residents assistant (RA) in one of Purdue’s residence halls. RAs live amongst the residents on their floor and aim to support student growth and success. Their responsibilities include helping students move and settle into their dorms, resolving conflict between students, little bit of cleaning, patrolling the hallways, organizing floor events to promote community and more. The benefits of becoming an RA include free housing and meal plan. There are also opportunities to work at the front desk or offices of residence halls. To learn more about these opportunities visit the University Residences website!
UR Conductors - Tour Guides
I remember going on campus tours when I was trying to decide on a college and always thinking the tour guide was so cool! They were real college kids who knew the campus so well that they could walk through it backwards. They would gush about the school and the fun experiences they had as students, making you want to go there even more. I would be so excited and imagine myself going to that school too in a few years, maybe I would even become a tour guide! Luckily, once you get to Purdue, that opportunity is definitely available to you. Through University Residences, students are trained to become UR conductors and lead walking tours around campus for prospective students and their families. It’s a fun opportunity to gush about the campus you love and make an impact on future students! To learn more about the opportunity check out this link.
Dining Halls
If you want a job opportunity that is located conveniently close to where you live on campus, check out the opportunities at Purdue Dining and Culinary. Students can work in one of the many dining courts or restaurant locations (i.e. Panera bread, Moe’s, Chick Fil-A) on campus and support their operations. The hours can be pretty flexible, there’s opportunities for advancement and you get a free meal with every shift! If you’re not interested in a dining court, there are plenty of other cafes and restaurants on and off campus that are always hiring.
Cordova Recreational Sports Center
For those who might already love to spend their free time at the gym, there’s even opportunities to work for our on-campus gym Cordova Recreational Sports Center (a.k.a. The Corec). The Corec is actually the 2nd largest employer on campus and the opportunities are endless. Students can work in general facility operations as well as work for services like aquatics, club sports, climbing, personal fitness, wellness and more. It’s a great opportunity to gain real-world experience, meet plenty of people and blow off some steam! To learn more about student employment opportunities at the Corec, check out this link.
Purdue Athletics
Students who are especially passionate about a certain sport can also take on more responsibility with certain Purdue athletic team. Becca is a junior in material science engineering and describes her experience working for the Purdue diving team:
“Working as a manager for an athletic team has been one of the most rewarding jobs I have had while at Purdue. Coming from playing a sport in high school, this was a really meaningful way to be involved with the sport I loved. Much of my job involves capturing videos of athletes for coach feedback during practices, being assistants to the coaches and athletes when we travel across the Big 10, and running the meet-management table for all home meets at our beautiful competition pool. This job has allowed me to meet athletes I had admired for years, travel to some cool places, and develop my professional skills.”
