What to do now that you're admitted to Purdue!

Congratulations and welcome to the Boilermaker family! I remember being where you are four years ago: refreshing my email after school until my admissions decision from Purdue finally came in. Opening up my portal to read “Congratulations! You’ve been offered admission to Purdue University”, I felt a huge sense of relief. I was going to college! However, soon after opening my offer letter, I was unsure of what to do next. You might be facing a similar feeling. Let this blog serve as a guide to some next steps to take in your college decision process!

Visit Purdue’s Campus

One of the best ways to get a feel for a school is by visiting their campus. More specifically, it is best to visit a campus while school is in session. This way you get a better understanding of what daily life looks like for students on campus. There are numerous opportunities in the spring to visit Purdue whether that is through an official daily visit or a “Purdue’s for Me” Day. During Purdue's for Me Day, the Women in Engineering Program hosts a session where you can learn more about the WiE Program and meet current students sharing their experiences about their time at Purdue. Look out for future communication from us about the dates, times, and locations of these sessions! You can also learn more about visiting opportunities for admitted students here.

Weigh All of your Options

We fully understand the magnitude of the college decision. While it can feel overwhelming to decide what school is the best fit for you, there are specific factors to look into that can help narrow down your decision even further. For example, one of my biggest factors when narrowing down what school I wanted to attend was student quality of life. A piece of advice I received when visiting schools was to ask students you might run into “are you happy here”? I asked my tour guides and students working at a local coffee shop or at the Union if they enjoyed being students at that school. Overwhelmingly, and unsurprisingly now looking back, students at Purdue said they loved it and were so happy they came here. That was something very important to me when deciding where I wanted to go to college. For other ways to weigh your options, check out this blog here.

Sign up for Housing

Once you put in your deposit for Purdue, you can put in your preferences in the housing portal. Be sure to do so by April 13th to submit your housing contract by April 15th! April 15th is also the deadline to apply for learning communities. The Women in Engineering Program does have its own learning community where you will live in the Meredith South Residence Hall among other women who are also studying engineering in their first year. Learning communities help foster a sense of community that makes it easier to make friends and meet study mates. Learn more about the WiE Learning Community in a blog post here.

Finish Strong and Enjoy!

While it might be tempting to count down the days and wish you were already at graduation, I would encourage you to slow down and take in these last few months of high school. Go to spring formal or Prom. Participate in all the senior year activities! Before you know it, you’ll be walking across the stage and shaking your principal’s hand. Then, it’ll be over. Spend time with your family and friends, as those memories will last for years to come.

All of your hard work has finally paid off! We hope that this guide can help you navigate these next few months as you make your final college decision. In the meantime, come visit us on campus, and if you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to us!
