Thankful to Be a Boilermaker
It’s that time of year
where we take a moment to reflect what we’re thankful for. Women in engineering at Purdue created a list
of some of the reasons why we’re thankful for Purdue.
- Helpful professors
- Many professors show a genuine
interest in teaching and helping students. They care that you understand the concepts and not just that you can pass the class.
- Help rooms
- Some courses have help rooms,
which give you a place to work with other students on homework and get
help from TAs when it’s needed.
- Office hours and review
sessions
- They’re hosted by TAs and
professors and they give you an opportunity to ask questions and enhance your understanding of class material. Office hours also give you a chance to get to know the people who are teaching you.
- Professional opportunities
- I am thankful to go to a school that offers a lot of opportunities to find summer internships and
jobs after graduation through a multitude of career fairs.
- The community in First-Year Engineering
- I’ve found a great support system and made great
memories with lifelong friends.
- Intramural Sports
- It's fun to form a team with people on your residence hall floor or in a club, and playing a sport can be a great break from studying.
- On-campus jobs
- “I am thankful for my job with
Purdue Recreation and Wellness because I have the chance to make new
friends and meet a diverse group of people while also learning how to be
a leader and take control of difficult situations.” – Libby Kolbe, ChE

- Boiler Gold Rush (BGR)
- "I’m thankful for BGR because it introduced me to
the campus and made me feel at home at Purdue knowing people before
classes started.” – Selina Woo, IE ‘23
- Friendship & personal growth
- "Purdue has given me lifelong friends and an
opportunity to be independent and be able to fully express myself.” –
Lucy Wagner, First-Year Engineering
- Bringing alumni back to talk
- This shows that there are many successful people who
were where you are now, and if they can succeed, so can you!
- Study abroad opportunities
- There are study abroad opportunities for almost
anything and there are also scholarships for most of them! There are even
study abroad opportunities focused around engineering- specifically with
the GEARE program.
- Class range
- General electives are flexible, and this gives you a
chance to learn new subjects outside of your major. Also,
specialties in the different engineering disciplines allow you to take
classes specific to what you want to learn.
- A very collaborative
environment
- Working through projects with other students helps you get to know other people with similar interests.
