First-year women majoring in engineering can choose to live on one of the designated engineering floors in Meredith South Hall. The students who live on the engineering floors have access to female engineering mentors on an informal basis, who provide them with support and encouragement. Since engineering students share a common first-year curriculum, the women on the engineering floors are easily able to form study groups and social networks. Many of the resident assistants assigned to the engineering floors are engineering students themselves, and are able to relate to the residents academically as well as socially. In addition, the WIEP-WISP (Women in Science Program) tutoring center is located in nearby Shreve Hall for convenience. Participants in the WIEP Residential Program can also participate in other Purdue Engineering learning communities if the residency requirement is co-located or optional, and many of them do so.
Courses
Students hear presentations from a variety of engineering alumnae who talk about their career choices, their daily routines on the job, and their challenges and successes in their professions as well as in their personal lives. Speakers range from recent graduates to well established corporate executives. This course is for first-year students.
Research has shown that women earn less than men for the same job in which both candidates are equally qualified. Salary rate increase and possible promotions may also be hindered from a lack of understanding or adjustment to the workforce climate. This course engages students in the practice of professional development skills to maximize the earning potential and promotion opportunities of female engineers while studying the transition in climate and culture from academia to workforce. Understanding and adapting to this new environment early will improve our engineering graduates' workforce experience, promotion and professional growth opportunities, and overall retention of women in engineering and related fields.
Networking
The Mentees & Mentors Program, or M&M, is designed for you to build a network with other female engineering students while learning timely personal and professional strategies to help you be successful in the classroom and on the job. Mentoring relationships are key for sharing and receiving helpful advice about engineering, college life, and successful preparation for the future.
As these are designed to be informal, please come as you are (no need to dress up) and feel free to drop by for a brief chat or stay for the entire event. On occasion, alumnae may indicate that they are interested in recruiting for their company, and in those cases, we will indicate if the visiting alumnae are interested in accepting resumes.
WE Link portrays the academic and social experiences associated with the exciting and opportunity filled engineering program Purdue offers. WE Link focuses on activities that help young women interested in engineering learn more about life as a female engineering student at Purdue by discussing dorm life, typical classes for engineering students, and other awesome experiences Purdue students have.
