My Study Abroad Experience

My Study Abroad Experience

Do you have a dream travel destination? Purdue has study abroad locations in over 45 different countries! Last summer I used this opportunity to travel to Italy for a 4 week long program and it was one of the most impactful experiences of my life.

During the four week program, I took two communications courses through the College of Liberal Arts. That’s right, you don’t necessarily have to be in a major in the college that the study abroad program is through! These courses counted as general electives for my Biomedical Engineering plan of study and allowed me to make friends in different majors. Aside from the coursework of the study abroad program, I did a lot of exploring! This specific program had classes scheduled Monday through Thursday, leaving the weekend free for extra travel opportunities. Our program was located in the beautiful Siena, Italy which is part of the Tuscany region of Italy. The program focused on communication and culture and involved a few day trips to vineyards, a cooking class, and pasta and cheese factories in the area to give us more exposure to the culture.

During the long weekends and before the program began, I traveled to Rome, Florence, Cinque Terra, and Venice, Italy, as well as Paris, France, Brussels, Belgium, and other small towns along the way. At each place were breathtaking views and history to be appreciated. Most days included wandering the historic streets, meeting people from all over the world, and eating a lot of very delicious food!

Getting to experience cultures outside the U.S. was a very enlightening experience and gave me a new perspective of the world. This perspective will be forever invaluable, especially as I begin my career after graduation. I would encourage anyone who is remotely interested in studying abroad to search Purdue’s study abroad website and consider applying for a program that’s the right fit for you and your plan of study.
