Top 10 Tips for Getting Involved at Purdue

Beginning your journey at Purdue is exciting; you get to begin a whole new chapter of your life!  The organizations that you are involved with will likely be a big part of your life on campus.  Outside of classes and homework, clubs are a great way to meet new people and find what you are passionate about.  Here is some of our best advice on ways to get involved in organizations while at Purdue!

  1. Attend callouts

These usually happen near the beginning of each semester and information can be found on a club’s website.  Organizations might also write callout information with chalk on the ground; check one out that you pass on your way to class!  Also, remember, a callout is not a commitment, and usually, there is free food!

  1. Check Out the Activities Fair

This takes place at the beginning of each year, and do it to see what new opportunities there are on campus.  Information about the hundreds of clubs we have on campus is also posted through a site called BoilerLink.  Who knows, maybe you’ll find an organization where you can really make an impact!

The B-Involved fair is put on through Purdue University at the beginning of each academic year.

  1. Keep an open mind

Especially when going to callouts or even tag along with a friend to learn about different opportunities at Purdue.  You might find you’re passionate about something you never expected.

  1. Get involved in a non-engineering club

These clubs are a great break from difficult classes.  This could range anywhere from PUDM to intramurals or even a service-based organization.
Purdue University Dance Marathon (PUDM) is an annual event that is highly participated in by students at Purdue.

  1. Reach out to upperclassmen

These students could be in your major or are involved in different things that interest you.  Learning about their experiences might open a door for you to do something that you love.

  1. Get involved in a club

Getting involved in a club early in your time at Purdue will help you get more out of the organization.  You will also be able to make a greater impact.  BUT also know that it is never too late to join something that interests you!

  1. Try something new!

College is time to try something new and get out of your comfort zone!  A good way to do this is to try out different organizations, even if they are completely different than what you did in high school.

  1. Find a club that gets you excited to be involved and attend meetings.

You will get out as much as you put into the club.  You might as well make it the best experience you can!

  1. Try out a few different activities at the beginning and then narrow down what you are involved in based off the ones that interest you.

  1. It’s totally normal to change it up during your four years at Purdue!  If you find something that you enjoy, even as a junior, give it shot and see how it goes.  It’s never too late to try something new!

With these tips, I hope you can make the best of your experience at Purdue and become inspired to try something new!
