Discipline-Specific Organizations at Purdue
Discipline-Specific Organizations at Purdue
Looking for a way to gain crucial leadership, networking,
and communication skills? Want to boost your professional development expertise
and connect with others in your major? If so, discipline-specific organizations
in the engineering school here at Purdue are the perfect place to do so! These
organizations include the Biomedical Engineering Society (BMES), the American
Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE), the American Society of Civil
Engineers, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and more. Almost every
engineering discipline at Purdue has a chapter for national engineering
organizations such as those provided above. Also, once admitted to your
discipline of choice, in most disciplines you will automatically become a
member of the organization correlating with your major. There are tons of
opportunities to get more involved, however, and build connections with those
in your discipline.
Many of the organizations participate in similar activities
on campus, but they also hold events unique to their society! Activities in
common include organizing lab tours, free food for students the week before
finals, networking events with major companies, socials for students and
faculty, and student panels regarding internships and research. As a member, you
have the opportunity to attend these events, of course, but you can also assist
in planning, organizing, and working the events. Other events unique to
societies include a mentor-mentee program, which takes place in BMES, free
pancake breakfasts (AIChE), a civil engineering-specific career fair (American
Society of Civil Engineers), and volunteering together at local food banks and
animal shelters (BMES).
I personally chose to get involved with the executive board
of Purdue’s chapter of BMES, and have had a great experience getting to know
the juniors and seniors in biomedical engineering and gaining professional
development skills. I love having the opportunity to meet many of my peers at
social gatherings such as cookouts and bowling events, but BMES also gives me
the opportunity to connect with major companies such as Epic and Zimmer-Biomet.
The society also provides a wall of positivity in the BME building to inspire
students to keep persevering through the semester and aiming to succeed. Be
sure to consider joining an organization like those provided above when you
come to Purdue!
