Meet the Boilermakers - Making Friends in College

A common misconception about large universities is that it will be hard to meet and connect with people.  At Purdue, there are so many ways to make friends! Here are some ways you can meet the Boilermakers.

1. Meet the Classy Boilermakers

We all know that it’s important to go to class in order to succeed in academics, but it can also be a great way to make friends. Whether it’s a class for your major or an elective, you can find something that you have in common with the other people.  In college, most classes won’t have assigned seating, so it can be fun to sit next to someone new and introduce yourself.  Most Purdue students are friendly, and it’s always helpful to know people that you can work and study with.

2. Meet the Sporty Boilermakers

Purdue has a great recreation center (the Co-Rec) that makes it a little bit easier to work out and avoid the “Freshman 15.”  At the Co-Rec, there are intramural sports that anyone can get involved in!  You can get involved no matter if you used to play the sport in high school or not, so it’s a great way to stay active and meet other people in a relaxed environment.

3. Meet the “Bleed Black and Old Gold” Boilermakers

One of the exciting parts of attending a Big 10 school is all the sporting events that you can attend.  If you love going to football games, you can sit with the Ross-Ade Brigade, or if you prefer basketball, you can join the Paint Crew.  Going to games with a couple people from your residence hall floor is a great way to support the Boilermakers and meet other Purdue fans!

4. Meet the Traditional Boilermakers

Purdue has so many unique traditions.  One of the Purdue bucket list items is to go sledding down Slayter Hill.  It’s such a nostalgic activity that pairs well with college students looking to enjoy the snow. At these classic events on Purdue’s campus, you’ll find a large variety of students all looking to have fun together while keeping an awesome tradition alive.

5. Meet the Organized Boilermakers

There are so many student organizations that you can join on campus! By going to callouts at the beginning of a semester, you can find out which ones you’re most interested in and get involved.  Finding a couple of organizations that you truly enjoy is a great way to meet people who have similar passions and interests as you, and that’s a solid foundation for a friendship.

With so many ways to meet the Boilermakers, it’s fun to find friends at Purdue!  Making friends in college is important, and it’s an enjoyable process when you find people through classes, events, and activities that you like.
