Tips for Staying Organized in College

As the school year gets into full swing, engineering students at Purdue are getting organized. Recently, we asked female engineering students what they did to stay organized and excel in the classroom during the school year. Here's some tips they provided!

WE Link volunteers shared their advice for staying organized this school year.

  1. Get a planner
Getting a planner is a great way to stay organized during the school year! Many students recommended getting a planner in order to keep track of all assignments. Grace Filley, a junior in Agricultural and Biological Engineering, Borla Endes, a graduate student in Industrial Engineering, and Brittany Kent, a junior in Agricultural and Biological Engineering, stressed it is important to put all due dates and exams into your planner to make sure you are staying on top of them. Additionally, they recommend reading through the syllabus to make sure you understand the course expectations and you have all the materials you need. Planning out your semester to make sure you don’t miss deadlines is crucial to succeeding in the classroom!

  2. Get your homework done early
Working on assignments ahead of time can be a great way to stay on top of things during the semester. Katherine Franko, a senior in Chemical Engineering, Kayley Kuhn, a senior in Chemical Engineering, and Aisha Mahmud, a sophomore in Industrial Engineering recommend starting homework sooner rather than later to make sure you have time to get help if needed. They also recommend blocking off time during the day to work on different assignments to give yourself time to get everything done.

 3. Go to SI/Office Hours
Many students recommend taking advantage of office hours and a class-specific group-study program Purdue offers called Supplemental Instruction (SI). Cassidy Voix, a sophomore in Mechanical Engineering, Kaitlin Dunlavy, a sophomore in Industrial Engineering, and Annie Maloney, a sophomore in Mechanical Engineering, recommend going to office hours to get to know the professors for the course and ask questions to gain a better understanding of the material. They also recommend attending SI to review the material you covered in class and work through problems with your peers.

4. Start studying early
Studying early makes sure you have enough time to review anything you may have missed in class. Tori Welker, a sophomore in Industrial Engineering, Wren Weyenberg, a sophomore in Environmental and Ecological Engineering, Emma Hundt, a sophomore in Industrial Engineering, and Allison Galitz, a sophomore in Industrial Engineering, recommend getting your assignments done in advance in order to dedicate more time to studying for exams. They also recommend starting to study early so you can plan out what to cover ahead of time.

5. Don’t be afraid to ask for help
A tip many students gave to incoming students is to not be afraid to ask for help! There are countless opportunities to get help here, including office hours, SI, and the Women in Engineering Program’s free tutoring program. Although it can be scary, asking for help when you need it is crucial to succeeding in the classroom!
