How to Visit Purdue 101
1. Exploring Engineering at Purdue
As an admitted or prospective student at Purdue, there are
so many ways to visit and experience all Purdue has to offer. One great way to
come to campus is to attend the Women in Engineering Program’s event called “Exploring
Engineering at Purdue.” The event is run twice a year (once each semester),
and will be held on April 20th this Spring (you can register here)!
Exploring Engineering at Purdue allows current junior and senior women in high
school to explore the different types of engineering Purdue offers, tour the
campus (including tours in the First Year Engineering buildings and
classrooms), and connect with current women in engineering students and faculty
in learning about curriculum and extracurricular activities. The all-day event
is a great way to picture what life could look like at Purdue and give prospective
women engineers an idea of what discipline within engineering they are
interested in.
I personally had a chance to attend Exploring Engineering at Purdue my junior year of high school. It was my first college visit and my first real exposure to what studying engineering would look like. I remember thinking how crazy it was that Purdue offered so many engineering disciplines, student organizations to be a part of, and resources (especially in the Women in Engineering Program). I had a feeling that if I ended up attending Purdue, I knew I would be able to thrive and succeed both in the classroom and out. The picture above is me four years ago at the event! Clearly it left a mark on me, as I ended up here and am thankful for every minute of my college experience at Purdue thus far!
2. Purdue’s for Me Days
Other opportunities to visit campus include Purdue’s for
Me days. This event runs almost every Monday starting on February 17th
and the last event is April 6th (Register here!).
They are explicitly for admitted students, and allow high school students to
tour campus, learn more about their potential majors, explore housing options
and other campus resources, and talk with students, advisors, and faculty. For prospective
female engineering students, the Women in Engineering Program will also be
offering a session after the regular agenda for students and their parents to
come learn more about everything Purdue’s Women in Engineering Program has to
offer! The information session will be a great way to get any of your questions
answered regarding what it’s like to be a woman in engineering at Purdue. The
Purdue’s for Me days tend to fill up fast, so make sure to register as soon as
possible if you’re interested!
3. Schedule a personalized visit
Another option to come to campus as an admitted student is to set up a personalized
visit with the Women in Engineering Program. If none of the above options
work with your schedule, you can always reach out to us at welink@purdue.edu to set up a personalized
day and shadow a Leadership Team member. This option is a great way to connect
with current female engineering students and talk about any excitements or
concerns you may have. You also would have the chance to familiarize yourself
with the campus and sit in on classes in disciplines of your interest. Finally,
Purdue offers general tours almost every day, so the two could be scheduled in
series!
