Purdue Traditions Bucket List
Though students at Purdue have to commit a share of their time to their studies, it is so important to have a balance of work and fun. Luckily, Purdue has a plethora of traditions and exciting bucket list items to make sure that students are making the most of their college experience. Through taking part in some classic Boilermaker traditions myself, Purdue went from a foreign place to my home, and I became part of the Purdue family. To make the most of your Purdue experience, I would recommend making and fulfilling a similar bucket list during your time here!
1. Fountain Run
When you arrive on campus in the late summer, it is the perfect time to do one of my favorite traditions: the Fountain Run! Purdue has four fountains conveniently located in a loop. It is a time-honored tradition to race through the Engineering Fountain, the Stone Lion Fountain (which is said to grant students luck on an exam or presentation should they drink the water out of each head), the Memorial Fountain, and the Lobe Fountain. Not only will this exercise leave you exhilarated and refreshed, but you will also have a blast and make memories that are sure to last!
2. Football games & riding in the Boilermaker Special
As fall sets in, football season starts up. Waking up at the crack of dawn to tailgate and get excited for the big game is always fun! After tailgating, attending the games and participating in the student section cheers with my fellow Boilermakers always brings me a special sense of comradery and pride that I will cherish forever. Be sure to watch the amazing All-American Marching Band perform during halftime! Also, the Boilermaker Special, Purdue’s functioning train mascot, is constantly cruising around campus, blaring upbeat music and offering students a lift. Be sure to hop on to enjoy a ride in what is, in my humble opinion, the coolest university mascot around!
3. Basketball games
When the snow starts to fall, yet another season comes to bring new exciting traditions. Whether you are a basketball fan or not, nothing rivals the feeling of excitement and hope that comes when watching a Purdue vs. Indiana University men’s basketball game. I have honestly never heard anything as loud as the fans in Mackey Arena!
4. Sledding down Slayter Hill
Once there is a decent layer of snow on the ground, Slayter Hill is the place to be. Students swarm the hill with anything from cardboard boxes to cookie sheets to couches to the occasional legitimate sled. Running up and sledding down the hill is the perfect way to decompress and enjoy the weather with friends!
5. Grand Prix
Each year, there is a 50-mile, 160-lap go-kart race called Grand Prix. All of the karts are made from scratch by student organizations. This event raises money for student scholarships. Boilermakers head to the racetrack each year to support their favorite team and blow off some steam before buckling down for finals!
No matter the season or weather, Purdue offers so many timeless traditions and activities that are sure to engage all of its students, and these draw us together into what is fondly referred to as the Boilermaker Family. Should you decide to attend Purdue, be sure to make and check off a bucket list to ensure you leave with as many fond memories as possible.
