4 Tips to Fund Your Education

Have you found your perfect school, but are unsure how to fund your four years of education? The price tag on college may seem daunting, but luckily there are plenty of opportunities to earn scholarships through Purdue or external resources (such as your community or online). Furthermore, Purdue and other colleges offer financial aid in other forms too, whether it be grants, loans, or work study programs! When applying for scholarships...

1. Be yourself & Apply Anyway

Don’t be shy to tell the scholarship committee about all the great things you have done. Share your interests, aspirations, and what makes you unique. Even if you don't think you meet all the qualifications for the scholarship, apply anyways! An applicant does not need to meet all the criteria to be a strong candidate for a scholarship.

2. Use Your Resources

Use scholarship search engines and your advisers (especially once you get to Purdue!) to find out about new scholarship opportunities. Find more information here! When applying for scholarships that require letters of recommendation, it helps to connect with a professor well in advance of your inquiry, so the professor is more familiar with you upon asking. Another great resource for a letter of recommendation is job managers or advisers of organizations you’re involved with.

3. Be Persistent

Many students stop applying for scholarships once they start college, but there are so many opportunities once you get to Purdue to help fund your studies! Various organizations such as Purdue Engineering Student Council (PESC) will offer scholarships to all engineering students throughout the school year. Also, organizations you join once in college will offer scholarships each yearly, as will the Women in Engineering Program and your selected discipline!

4. Take Advantage of Work Opportunities

Even if you do not receive a ton of private or university-specific scholarship to fund your education, there are other ways to fund your education, too! Many universities, like Purdue, offer work study programs for those who qualify. It is also common for students to work a part-time job, either on-campus with the university or off-campus, to aid in paying for school. Finally, many students take advantage of paid co-op and internship opportunities to save money for college (pictured above).

The last option to help pay for college is to utilize university grants and other federal financial aid or private loan services. Many students will take advantage of a mix of these throughout their four years of undergraduate education. Overall, the money that accompanies attending college may feel daunting, but there are plenty of ways to receive scholarship/financial aid and therefore pursue a degree you love!
