Why We Love WIEP Tutoring

College classes can be a large adjustment from high school classes. That’s why the Purdue Women in Engineering Program (WIEP) is here to help! As a woman in engineering at Purdue, you are automatically a part of WIEP and can take advantage of many opportunities and resources such as seminar classes, a mentorship program, informal chats with alumnae, and even free tutoring.

What is Purdue WIEP’s free tutoring?

WIEP has partnered with Purdue’s WISP (Women in Science Program) to provide free homework and study help for 100 and 200 level math, science, and engineering courses. These 100&200 level classes cover roughly all engineering-specific courses you will take as a first-year engineering student at Purdue. Tutoring is offered both in-person and online!

Where and when is the tutoring?

Both in-person and online tutoring occurs between 7 PM and 10 PM every Sunday through Thursday. In-person tutoring takes place at the University Residences Support Center (URSC) in Shreve Hall (dorm on the residential side of campus) in Room C123. For online tutoring, students must fill out a form indicating which class they would like tutoring for and then will be given the link to the online tutoring session.

Do I need to make an appointment?

No appointment is needed! You are welcome to drop in at any time and will receive help from one of the tutors. For the in-person tutoring, we are following the Protect-Purdue Guidelines; as such, only so many people can be in the room at one time.

What do I need to bring with me?

Be sure to bring course materials such as your textbook or class notes, material you would like help with (questions or homework), calculator, and mask (for in-person tutoring).

Why should I go to tutoring?

First and foremost, for free help with your engineering courses! WIEP tutoring is also a great opportunity to meet some other students taking the same classes as you.

Personal Anecdote

Three years ago, I took part in the GOSS Scholars (Honors Engineering) first-year engineering track. Our homework each week consisted of a problem set that was due every Friday before the class period. Office hours for our class, held every Wednesday night were, needless to say, extremely popular among students in the class. During our fourth week of classes, we had a particularly challenging problem set. At office hours I met two other women working on the same 3 intricate problems that I was trying to solve. We were able to work together and receive help from a TA on two of the three, but by the time office hours were completed at 7:30PM we still had the last problem to finish. Having been to the WIEP/WISP tutoring before I suggested we all head down the hall to see if the tutors could aid us with that final problem. Sure enough, the tutors were able to highlight some of the important concepts utilized in the problem, and we all finished the homework by 8:30PM and decided to get a late dinner together. That night was pivotal for me as a freshman because not only did I solve the problem correctly with the help from the tutors (and receive much more help thereafter for other courses), but also I met two new people who became two of my best friends throughout college.
