Tips for Getting an Internship
Build Your Resume
Having all your achievements and details on a single piece of paper and getting an interview based on that can seem a little daunting. There are so many formats, so ways to present your experience. To get you started, look through the handbook that the CCO provides. It is a detailed book that helps you build a resume from scratch. Once you are done doing that, you can also get advice on it by submitting it on Vmock. All this is free! As a Purdue student, you are allowed to submit your resume ten times each semester.
Make Connections
Precisely that. How to do that in a college setting? Talk to your professors. Ask them about their experiences and what industry they worked in. Join a professional Club and talk to the members about how contributing to the club helped them in their careers. You can easily pull up a list of clubs on boilerlink and filter them to see the technical clubs. Attend general meetings and decide whether you want to stick with the club or not. Apply for mentorship programs in your field of engineering. If you are in FYE, the WIEP Mentors and Mentee program can be very helpful to talk to women who have previously gone through this process.
Career Fairs
Every semester, the Purdue Engineering Student Council organises the industrial roundtable and the Expo fair in the fall and spring semesters respectively. This is an excellent opportunity to talk to recruiters! You can ask them questions about their company and work culture, while they get to know you through your resume and interests. Book your time slots as soon as they are available because they do fill in quickly! Also, make sure to send a connection request to them on LinkedIn in case you want to know more. WIEP also has an entire blog dedicated to the EXPO 2022 Career Fair. Make sure to check that out!
Start Early
Filling up applications can take up lots of time. Look at the different websites through which you are applying. Usually going to the companies’ website in which you are interested is the most helpful but there are other ways too. I prefer looking through Indeed and LinkedIn and then checking out the websites. Be sure to make a note of all the companies you are applying to. Keep track of your application.
