What is Early Start at Purdue?

Early Start at Purdue can be a great opportunity to get used to Purdue and the college environment before the rest of your peers. Here are some things to know about early start to see if it would be the right fit for you:

The Basics

Early Start is from mid July to mid August, and the move-in date for those on-campus is a couple days before classes start. The five weeks of classes is equal to a full regular semester of class. Those who live on-campus will be living in a standard double room with air-conditioning. For those who did not originally submit that they want to attend Early Start, admission to Early Start comes on a first-come-first-serve basis so it is recommended to apply as soon as possible if you are interested.

Early Start Options: On-Campus, Off-Campus, Online

With Early Start, students have the option to live on-campus in the dorms, to live off-campus and commute, or to participate online. Housing is heavily discounted and it can be a great opportunity to get used to living with roommates, if you plan on living with roommates in the Fall or in the future. The cost of dorming also includes a meal plan and dining dollars. The meal swipes can be used at select dining courts around campus and the dining dollars can be spent on extra meals or snacks or drinks.

If you are living off-campus, there are no housing nor meal plan costs. These students are also heavily encouraged to participate in activities outside of the residence halls and are encouraged to participate in the orientation days in early July.

Most students participating in in-person Early Start can take 7-9 credits hours. International students, however, have a minimum of 6 credit hours with a maximum of 3 credit hours from online or distance-learning classes. International students must also join Early Start by April 15th due to visa processing times.

If you are participating online, you can take either 1-5 credit hours or 6-9 credit hours online. There are no activities like those for students in in-person Early Start. However, it is still a great opportunity to get ahead in course work and get back into the academic headspace.

Course Options

For all students participating in Early Start, you may take up to two 3 credit hour classes and have an option of three 1 credit hour classes. These classes are HONR 19900: Introduction to Research Planning, GS 19501: Preparing for Your Undergraduate Research Experience, or GS 12000: Summer Start Seminar.

HONR 19900 is a seminar class that focuses on preparations for research in classes. GS 19501 is an undergraduate research preparation class that will have students preparing an application packet to submit to a research team or program of their choice. GS 12000 is a seminar that will introduce students to Purdue academics and will teach habits that will be useful for personal and academic tasks.

Other than these required classes, there is a complete list of courses specific to in-person, remote classes, and online classes. This can be found on the Purdue Early Start website found here. Most in-person classes are 90 minutes long and run Monday through Friday. Online courses will be required to meet deadlines through the class but will be student-paced with professors available for assistance.

Benefits and Fun Summer Events

Some fun summer events that are put on by Purdue include a summer concert series (for which the tickets are exceptionally well priced), laser tag, movie nights on Slater Hill, multiple BBQs, and a block party on Third Street. There are numerous other events and students are encouraged to plan events with each other to bond and de-stress during the summer semester.

Some benefits of Early Start include discounted tuition rates, future lighter course work during the Fall and Spring semesters, transitioning to campus early, and preparing for undergraduate research. Those who have experienced Early Start, including my roommate, say that, “Early Start, as it is a much smaller fraction of the freshman student body, fosters the formation of a family among those in Early Start”.

Early Start can be a wonderful introduction to the Purdue campus and community. It is highly recommended that all future freshmen look into it. To learn more information, visit the Early Start Purdue Website by clicking this link.
