With an undergraduate class size greater than 30,000 students, Purdue is filled with such diverse interests and hobbies. Students often come together to turn those interests and hobbies into a community. So, Purdue has plenty of clubs and organizations on campus for incoming students to easily get involved in. What are the usual tracks for First Year Engineers?
Purdue's engineering program is innovatively designed with a First-Year Engineering (FYE) Program in place to encourage students to refine fundamental engineering skills and discover the best suited engineering discipline for them. FYE is also a bit flexible in that students can enroll in a few different tracks based on the kinds of projects they are interested in working on. What academic support resources are available at Purdue for when I am struggling in my classes?
Purdue's coursework can be challenging in order to help students reach their full potential and prepare them to be valuable engineers out of college. However, there is always support available for students who struggle with particular topics or subjects, prefer different learning styles or just appreciate working with other students. The Women in Engineering Program provides free tutoring led by women in engineering upperclassmen who have likely taken the courses they are helping out with. Every course will have office hours to give students a chance to have discussions with and receive support from the professor and/or teaching assistants. Some departments even have help rooms led by teaching assistants when students want to come in and ask questions or work on assignments with other students. Purdue also has an academic success center with many free resources and supplemental instruction sessions if students want to explore different learning styles and habits or want more interactive practice in a particular course. What career opportunities and resources are available at Purdue for when I am trying to find an internship, co-op or full-time job?
Purdue is renowned for its massive alumni network and multitude of industry connections. As soon as you arrive on campus as a first year engineering student, you will already have the opportunity to attend career fairs, have constructive conversations with company recruiters and develop your professional skills through those experiences. The Center of Career Opportunities is run by staff and students who aim to support current students by reviewing resumes and cover letters, running mock interviews and providing the resources and information to help them impress any recruiter. The Women in Engineering Program
What are the benefits of living in the WIEP learning community?
The Women in Engineering Program's learning community is currently housed in the Meredith South residence hall. Students can apply to live in the learning community after accepting their offer of admission and have the opportunities to live amongst other women in engineering. The residents benefit from starting off their college experiences physically surrounded by a community of women who have similar interests, take similar courses and will be going through a similar experience. What resources does the Women in Engineering Program provide?
The Women in Engineering Program provides many resources for undergraduate women in engineering to help them succeed in and out of the classroom. All of the resources are free as well. Tutoring led by upperclassmen in engineering is currently available 5 days a week during the evening at Shreve residence hall. Mentees and Mentors is a mentorship program where members can choose to be paired with an upperclassman woman in engineering with similar interests or a group of other mentees and an upperclassman. During the monthly M&M meetings and socials, underclassmen and upperclassmen will come together to meet new people, exchange advice about any topic the mentees want to hear about and discuss important or even difficult subjects like gender in the workplace, imposter syndrome and more. The program also hosts multiple Access Alum events throughout the school year during which Purdue Alumna are brought back to talk about their experiences graduating from Purdue and the opportunities they pursued out of college. What is the Alumni network, especially for Women in Engineering, like at Purdue?
The Women in Engineering Program aims to created a united community of female engineers and they accomplish this by helping current students stay connected with alumna from the program. Alumna are always coming back to Purdue to do Access Alum events, speak at the Women in Engineering Seminar or even write guest blogs.
